Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Raw. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
RAW, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
This last year has been a whirlwind of meaningful projects. We’ve gotten some of our longest running projects, as well as some of the most challenging projects to work on. All of them within various fields of the entertainment industry.
This year has been characterized by a lot of work tailored to the gallery, museum and generally art spaces. Starting off with a collaboration with creative director and artist, Enrique Agudo, for which we have FLESH in release right now, a project commissioned by the Tom of Finland foundation and to be soon shown in Nick Knight’s SHOW Studio in London, as well as previously shown in Berlin’s Berghain club. Besides FLESH, we are currently collaborating with Enrique on a project going by the name of Castizo, which we’re extremely excited about. As we’re nearing the end of the year, we are also nearing the final stages of that process and we’re excited to be able to release the project into the world once it’s gone through its final steps. Whereas both FLESH and Castizo started off as fashion editorials, they’re going on to live lives in various directions. Which excites us even more, as it shows the versatility the body of work we’re creating truly holds!
Together with Jennifer Chen, we got the opportunity to be a part of Liam Young’s VIEWS OF PLANET CITY, which is currently on display at the Pacific Design Center in West-Hollywood. Another exhibition, for which we once again turned to the moving image as a medium. Through the exploration of remote sensing, not only as an instrument for scientific data collection, but as a speculative medium, Chen interrogates the capacity of its images to act, like maps have done throughout history, as culturally transformative artifacts.
Extremely provocative and unique in its approach, this film used only satellite imagery. From high above, detached and remote, we are granted the view of a planetary body undergoing vast change while being privy to intimate stories of lives that appear small, fragile, and inconsequential.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
RAW is a studio of speculative worldbuilders and explorers of uncharted territories. We seamlessly fuse design with 3D technology to craft narrative worlds—spaces where brands and storytellers can evoke emotion, leaving lasting impressions. Whether donning the hat of a real-time 3D artist, director, creative director, or provocateur, our dedication to exploring visual realms allows us to shape ideas of fiction or our future.
Our diverse backgrounds, personal stories, and the passion that brought us together in LA enrich our work with cultural depth and imbue it with a distinct personality. Although formally trained as architects, our shared love for storytelling and the moving image ultimately led us to the entertainment industry.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
RAW currently consists of four of us, our founders form a multinational team. We represent various cultural backgrounds and hold different experiences but similar skill sets.
The initial point in time during which we met one another was during the summer of 2022 in Los Angeles, a city we all decided to move to in pursuit of a career transition through SCI-Arc’s Fiction and Entertainment postgraduate program. Like we said, despite us coming from different places all over the world, all four of us shared similarities in our backgrounds as trained / practiced architects. Although formally trained as architects, our shared love for storytelling and the moving image ultimately led us to band together and find our footing as a cohort of creatives within the entertainment industry. After completing our Master’s degrees in Fiction and Entertainment at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), joining forces became the exciting next step in our future.
Our diverse backgrounds, personal stories, and the passion that brought us together in LA enrich our work with cultural depth and imbue it with a distinct personality.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the time that we met, we all went through a time during which we got provoked by the idea of pursuing different career options! All of us looked over the world for opportunities that interested us and for some odd reason, we all found our way to LA.
As we all realized that a traditional career in architecture wasn’t necessarily our preferred path, we found a new avenue that would allow us to grow in an adjacent creative industry. While this had us facing new challenges, we were all provoked by the idea of the new direction our lives were going in. Not only did we get an opportunity to challenge the traditional architecture roles but we also gained a lot of new insights and perspectives of how we could leverage our background into a new industry and stand out as pioneers within that tumultuous industry.
We have to note that we do enjoy being provocateurs, both in our interviews as in our work!
