Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Raven McCall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Raven thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I started my business in 2020 after getting laid off secondary to the Coronavirus Pandemic. After 3 months of being unemployed, I began to travel and visit family during my downtime and decided to visit my aunt. At this time she was making her own body butters and I thought that was pretty cool and interesting. In my mind at the time, I felt making body butters and baking was very similar due to the tools that are used and I didn’t feel that was for me. I’m not the best baker! After the trip, I came home and was sitting on the couch one day looking at a candle someone purchased for me burn. Instantly, I google “How To Make Candles”. The steps appeared pretty easy and from there I placed my first amazon order for all my equipment. I invested a lot of my personal income and time into cultivating the candles I wanted to introduce to others. The design, wax type, concept I created myself. From there I was encouraged to sell them by friends and the rest has been growth and history.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Raven McCall. I am an Alabama Native and Florida Resident of almost 7 years. I am an Implementation Professional and a full-time serial entrepreneur and creative. I became a Chandler in 2020 where I birthed my business (Euphonic Scents) as a full-time solo entrepreneur. Euphonic Scents creates illuminating holistic sensory candles and self-awareness-driven products for the benefits of mental health, clarity, and focus. Euphonic Scents candles are innovative due to the promotion of holistic healing and utilization of sensory transduction marketing to impact the client’s well-being. I am most proud of my growth in creativity and discovered parts of who I am through my entrepreneurship journey.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I first created my social media business page I felt very overwhelmed. The thought of managing another page and growing followers just appeared to be a lot to me at the time. Steps I took to gain my audience were promoting on my personal Instagram and Facebook pages. Creating a legitimate website for people that may come across my page while on social media or if I gave out a business card. Instagram later began to implement reels which I also feel helped me with brand awareness marketing and exposure. I also grew to become more consistent in my content posting and mapped the type of content I wanted to introduce to my audience.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Entrepreneurship is HARD and I have had to pivot many times in my business, career, and life. I pivoted when I became unemployed back in 2020 from a 9-5 to solo entrepreneurship. I pivoted when business became slow and money was tight and I needed to return to work to make ends meet. I pivoted when changing the design of my brand. I rebranded my company in 2022 and upgraded pricing, product aesthetics, my website, etc. I pivoted in creating multiple revenue streams in my business with hosting candle classes and creating custom orders. Pivoting is apart of life.
