We recently connected with Raven Eko and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Raven thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
l’ve been incredibly fortunate to experience so much kindness in my life, but one act of kindness stands out for me. It all began when my mom made the decision to move out of state, leaving me to fend for myself. With a stable job and a relationship at the time, I chose to stay put, but that meant I had to find a new place to live. Before I could purchase my first home, I found myself on the verge of homelessness struggling to secure a place to stay. Thankfully, a kind acquaintance offered me a place to live, transforming my life for the better. Though the transition brought forth challenges with my mental and physical well-being, I remain deeply grateful for their generosity. It was a bittersweet experience that I will always hold dear.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in a small town in Georgia, but I prefer to keep the exact location a mystery. I believe in keeping it mysterious because it didn’t exactly have a positive impact on me. Music has always been my passion. Before I started singing and rapping, I would dance to the beats that moved me. I’ve been writing poems for as long as I can remember, and one day, I transitioned into songwriting. My favorite genre is classical music, but I enjoy experimenting with different styles. I write my own music, with a little help from a collaborator to polish it up. I’m not sure how far my music career will take me, but I hope to continue writing for others and exploring different languages and cultures through my music. Aside from music, I’m also interested in trying out acting or modeling. I love to challenge myself and try new things, so who knows where this journey will lead me next!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe that society’s biggest contribution to supporting artists and creatives is by not putting them on pedestals. This can create ripples that impact the entire ecosystem of creativity. In my opinion, the skewed perceptions of artists and their work stem from this pedestal mentality. Artists are not just a brand with products to sell; they are individuals with unique personas and identities. It’s important not to confuse their public personas with their true selves. Let’s appreciate artists for who they are, not just what they create.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s a way for me to give back to myself after everything I’ve been through. Music has been so healing for me, bringing back a version of myself that I truly appreciate.
