We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Raven Coppage a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Raven, thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I started creating and making candles in January 2019. The idea actually came from my daughter and a gift she received. So next I got online Youtube specifically, and researched candle making videos and content. I had seen the creators were using candle making kits. I then later ordered a candle making kit that came with 24 jars and all of the required supplies. I told myself, I would make and test half of the jars and with the other half, I would sale them. Valentines Day was the launch day for the candle sale. When the day came to sell them, the candles surprisingly sold out. I was so happy. I decided to keep going and that is when I created the company Original Scentz LLC. A candle brand that represents where I am from.
Raven, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So as for me I was born, raised, and educated in Kansas City, Ks. I am a single mother of a beautiful little girl. We love to travel and experience new things from all over. I have been in the candle industry since 2019 and I am continuing to evolve my business, products, and services. My candle brand represents authenticity and being timeless. We provide products simply made for the comfort of your home, office, and even outdoors. You can choose from candles, incense, oils, wax melts, aroma beads, lighters, and even book candle services. Our candle services include a variety of candle making sessions. Being unique and different is what really sets our brand apart from all of the others. You will never get the same style of candle twice! Real exclusivity! I am very proud of how far the business has come and how much further it has to grow. We love to give back to the community and give everyone a chance to experience our products.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe that the best advertising and promotion is word of mouth. Building a rapport with returning and potential consumers is very important. This is how the news of your business will travel rather quickly. So for the most part besides my own business marketing I believe the customers helped me extremely. I am grateful for that as well.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy has been staying in touch. I am always actively sending out e mail marketing, subscription requests, using the social media platforms to interact and receive feedback about what they like and do not like. It makes the customer feel important and that their ideas matter and are taking into consideration.
