We were lucky to catch up with Ravaughn Crowley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ravaughn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project thus far has to be my “NEED MY FLOWERS BEFORE I GO…” collection. I feel like the concept is not only self explanatory but also relatable in the same token. In a more personal point of view this project was inspired by real emotions that I’ve felt throughout my journey as an artist/creative. I’ve worked under a state of anxiety originating from the fear of possibly not being able to see the fruits of my labor. In our society we see people who’ve built legacy’s receive delayed recognition/appreciation only to receive it when they’re no longer with us.
In my approach to my concept I wanted to make an impressionable garment that brought the emotion behind the concept to a tangible expression. I began to be very intentional with driving the point home with collaborating with other creators such as: photographers, videographers, poets, & music producers. I wanted my audience to see what it looked like to work alongside with and also honor other individuals in the present moment.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a 27 year old fashion designer from the southside of Chicago. I’ve been an entrepreneur since 2015. My career in sewing started off pretty amateur being self taught. Throughout the years I’ve occasionally dabbled into sewing trying to make improvements of my craft. It wasn’t until 2020 when I started to lean towards pursuing a strictly cut & sew original brand which is now known as, Vaughn Acquis.
The thing I’m most proud of in regards to my brand is being able to center the identity around something meaningful. Having the capacity to express myself and relate to others is part of what fuels me.
The slogan of the brand is “Feelings Were Projected Into This Garment”. As of right my garments are created to be 1 of 1 copies to provide clients with an exclusive look matched with an exclusive experience.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I would like to be transparent and start off saying I’m not you’re every day reader. However, I’ve come across some very impactful reads that’s been passed along through very good peers of mine. The first book is “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” by Deepak Chopra and the second is “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. These books doesn’t approach entrepreneurship directly, but they teach you great self management skills while also opening your mind to fresh perspectives.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I’ve touched on this a little bit before. The most rewarding part of being an artist is the connectedness you get to experience with others. When it comes to feelings you can tend to feel alone, boxed in, or misunderstood. You can begin to imagine how expressing yourself in a artistic way that translates to a shared experience with others can be such a blissful reward.
