We recently connected with Raushanah Sheffield and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Raushanah, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Oh man what I think success is… I feel like being successful is being happy with what you have and being eager to get more. Success can come from anything such as having kids, reaching goals, and staying focus. In my mind I’m on my way to success.
I have 4 beautiful daughters who have taught me to love no matter how hard life gets. Without being a mother, I really don’t think I would be sitting here writing this article. My kids have pushed me to be a better person. It’s like they know when I’m having a bad day and no matter what, they love me unconditionally. I remember I use to put my life off because ppl told me kids will ruin your life. No! I feel that’s a lie. Yeah, kids will push your goals back but never, I mean never, let kids stop you from achieving any goal. My kids have pushed me to be a better person, business woman and beautician.
Setting goals is a task. Man I set so many goals and thought it would be so easy to accomplish them. Um… nope! And that was the biggest disappointment. Not once well you ever hear me say I gave up. I push everyday to be the best I can be.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m really not that good at describing myself. But ima take a shot at it. My name is Raushanah (Shana) I am a Beautician and a future Trichologist (Hair Lost Specialist). I been in the hair care industry for over 20 years but been a licensed professional for 3 years now. One of the main reasons I joined this industry is because when I was younger my mother mixed two different kinds of relaxers together, which broke my hair out. After experiencing that disaster, I had a care for growing my own hair. What struck an interest in actually becoming a licensed professional was because of my girls. They wanted natural hair styles and I had no clue on how to do them. I didn’t know how to properly straighten hair. As time went on I had to find my lane and my craft. I was known for braids but braiding wasn’t something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I now feel strong in my craft which is Hair Restoration. While providing this service I had to get out my comfort zone and dig deeper on what I wanted to do. I came across clients who had alopecia, thinning of the hair as well as having problems with their hair reaching a certain length and if it did reach the desired length it would break right back off. I had no clue on how to do these kind of clients hair. Which made me start researching and making my own hair oils and body butters. The hair oils and body butters are handmade and is made with all natural ingredients. For three years i tested my oils out on my clients and got great results. So far the hair oil helps keep the scalp from becoming dry, which can cause more problems later on down the line. You have to know the difference, if the scalp being dry or if the hair shaft itself is dry. So I decided to research selling hair oils. I’m working on getting the hair growth oil on the market while having a collection of oils and body butters for different reasons. The goal is to market the oils for everyone but mainly people with alopecia and damaged brittle hair. I love helping people feel better about themselves makes me feel good to see others looking good. My craft has helped me to help others by bringing confidence to the ones who dare to be bold. Everyday I do my best to work on my craft. I have invested in taking classes as well as paying attention In the trichology training.
What sets me apart from most stylist is I’m one on one with my clients. When you book on my site you get a certain amount of time in my chair. It is just me and you with either the television on or music, depending on the day may be both. I get to set the tone and the mood for the day. Also, everyone who sits in my chair gets shampooed. Your clean isn’t my clean. I want to make sure that I have a clean foundation to work on. There are products that dnt interact with eachother well.
I am so proud of myself, every obstacle that has came my way I tackled it and kept going. In the last 6 months I have been able to cross off at least 2 goals every month. Determination is the key. Also, learning to work on myself is something I can say is paying off. Instead of working hard on my job I been working hard on myself. It allowed me to realize I cnt keep blaming the marketplace for not getting the results I want.
I want my followers to know it’s ok to fail. It’s ok to start over as many times as you need to. Stay a student, learn all that you can.
I want you to know if you are experiencing hair loss or just need a stylist who is reliable and non judgemental look me up. You are not alone, we can get thru this together. Many people is experiencing hair loss, thinning of the hair and even Alopecia. Please don’t give up. We can figure out a plan to get you back on track. Let Shana Sheff be the person you confide in before you decide to give up on all ends. My work speaks for itself. I love what I do!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Now this question is something serious. I had to unlearn marketing meaning only using social media. Now dnt get it twisted as a small business owner I am still learning, I do my best to be a student. Unlearning something that you think is right is a big challenge. I use to think social media was the only way to market. Umm wrong as I did my research I seen that many of my target clients do not have social media. The best way to market is word of mouth. Learning word of mouth goes a long way which is amazing. Yes, you can produce all the pictures as needed but if no one is talking about you and hyping your business up then you have a problem. I also learned that it’s really a good thing to clean up your social media if you are using that for advertisement. A friend of mine told me to stop posting nonsense if I really want to get serious about my business, right after that conversation I went and deleted all my post that wasn’t related to hair. A few weeks after cleaning up my social media I had a lady inbox me to tell me “I been following you for years, the reason I didn’t come to you then was because you had so much unnecessary things posted.” That right there lets me know just because I have so much to say it’s good to keep it to yourself. You never know who is watching.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me is consistency and having confidence in what i do. With anything you do you have to be consistent. Having consistency show commitment. No matter what market you are in people love to see that you will not switch up and you have the knowledge behind what service or product you are offering. With me it was hard trying to post on social media everyday, pass out flyers when I go to the hair stores or even when I’m out in public. I decided to set aside a hour to post on social media and one day a week pass out flyers. Once I made this a habit to do so, while showing confidence my audience grew as well as more clients reached out to me to come sit in my chair. Which is really amazing especially being able to see your own growth over the years. I also ask my clients to post on social media and tag me.
