We recently connected with Raul Rivero and have shared our conversation below.
Raul, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The following is a piece of conversation between Ansel Adams and Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway- Mr. Adams, I love your pictures, what brand of camera do you use?
Adams- Mr. Hemingway, I love your book, what brand of typewriter do you use?
This conversation never happened but it shows us regardless of what tools are used in the creation of art the person remains key.
Nowadays, even a smartphone helps us to capture what we see and want to express with good quality. But as a professional photographer who spends thousands of dollars on pro equipment and updates it is getting hard to stay in a business where the everyday hobbyist, who buys a phone with a camera, has a greater potential to capture good pictures than ever before, setting the standard even higher.
Raul, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I had been a videographer for more than 30 years and a photographer for the last 15 years for a couple of TV Networks in Mexico.
When I moved to Texas in 2016 from Mexico City, I decided to continue my passion as a commercial and portrait photographer, determined to offer a different texture and stylistic approach unique to my portraits.
An example being my headshot, props, colors and different poses to describe my client’s profession. A pen, a brush, colorful backgrounds and depth of field are all tools and techniques I use to create and distinguish my portrait work.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that my clients, the general public alike, appreciate and enjoy my work.
I have been so lucky receiving invitations to be a speaker in photo clubs and cities to talk about my work.
Receiving emails, text messages from others that want to use my photos in their companies lobbies, websites or business is what drives me to keep working on my craft and get better everyday.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
My journey in videography and photography started hands on in the field while I am appreciative of the opportunities I had. I didn’t have the luxury to first study any art of communications formally, I was just eager and willing to take my chance and jump into the entertainment industry fresh out of high school.
It was until many years later, I would have the opportunity to be in a workshop given for a professional photographer and that would really make a difference in my professional career Hindsight had I not need to work right away, I could have studied and dedicated time to learning that would have led me to where I am in my career sooner..
