We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Raul Menjivar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Raul below.
Raul, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Growing up, I always loved to challenge myself. I grew up with parents who migrated from El Salvador at a young age, and they have always been a great example for me to look up too. I Today I can say, I have worked in thousands of sessions. I’ve worked with big artists, beginners, and intermediates, and everyone in between, I have a home studio where I bring all my clientele. Sometimes get flown out the state for my work, and I have never been more grateful. Thanks to my younger self for challenging my self, always.
Raul, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always loved music. I used to Dj my school lunches on Fridays, experimented with producing dance music all around the age of 15. I indulged my self even more into the world of producing and shaping sound and began writing my own songs. I began to surround myself more around artists, producers, and engineers. Once I turned 18, I decided to start a new path for my self and leave where I grew up and lived my whole life to Los Angeles and once again, challenge myself. I attended La Recording School for about a year. Due to some life stuff, I didn’t finish.. but I met so many key and constructive connections that have changed my life forever, Peers and friends I began to make, heard what I was able to do with mixing vocals. I developed a clean, crisp sound that attracted many artists around me that wanted to start working with me. After a while, I created a strong workflow with a consistent clientele. Mostly from word of mouth, referrals from one person to another and grew to many. All throughout out this, I continued to grow, learn, and make my sound even more sharp and crisp. I kept writing and making my own music through out my journey, so soaking in all the experience was just a blessing.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes! My family, and loved ones. I know I was put on earth to love and help others. Help others who are maybe just like me, or from any background to understand that we are loved. Through art, music, and serving others, I’ve found myself and my purpose.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Growing up, my parents were always revolving around their business. They were great role models. Although, sometimes we didn’t fully see eye to eye. With them being involved in the finance industry, they did not really see pursuing music/audio engineering as a real job at first. As time went by, they got to see a whole new side of what’s possible with a creative mind, and the will to hustle.
