We caught up with the brilliant and insightful RaSheay Jacques a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
RaSheay, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
As a social media manager, trending new trends on social media is a part of my job. As social media changes and evolve so do the trends users take advantage of. The biggest trend this year has been short-form video, with the explosion of Tiktok this past year taking the focus away from photos and long-form videos.
Influencer Marketing has been on the rise also, even though influencers has been in the social media space for the last 10 years, recently social platform and brands have put a larger emphasis on influencer and creator to promote their product and services. More and more people know that they can get paid by simply posting to social platforms and generating real conversations around brands and their products.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is RaSheay Jacques, A Social Media Manager based in Charleston, SC. I started creating content in high school.I was obsessed with Youtube and creating content around subjects I loved. At the time Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram were still new social media platforms and creating content wasn’t popular. I wanted to create content for beauty brands because makeup was a hobby that I still love to this day.
In college, I studied Public Relations and Mass Communications. I was very determined despite what my family thought I should be doing as a career or even what my professors in college thought about traditional communications, I wanted to work in social media, I had friends who had businesses in college and they let me manage their social media accounts. I created campaigns, captions, and graphics for them and that’s how I got started as a social media manager.
Currently, I work as the director of social media and digital for The Cache Agency, a boutique digital marketing agency in Charlotte, NC. I started as an intern and have been growing with the company ever since.
We specialize in branding, social media management, digital marketing, and influencer management. As the director of the social media department, I manage clients’ social media pages, that includes scheduling posts, creating and editing content, creating analytical reports, trending social trends, etc.
My goal is to help business owners, especially women get time back into their businesses. Social media is a huge part of small business and I’ve found that WOC are mothers, we have traditional 9-5, families, and we have to play every role in our business. I want to help them grow their social media and create a community around their business to help them grow.
I am most proud of working for women of color-based businesses. Our founder is a black woman, I am a black woman, our team is growing of black women and my clients are black women who are growing businesses.
I want potential clients to know that working with me and the agency is a luxury experience. I give my clients the option to be hands-on with their social media or to be completely out of it. My job and goal are to get you off of social media and back into growing your business.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met Courtney in college, we studied at Francis Marion University, she already established a fashion boutique and I model for her fashion boutique. She started Cache and I had to be a part of it. Our goals and vision were aligned and we have been on this journey ever since.
Courtney has been a mentor, and a leader, her vision is impeccable. We work so well together, I thank God for our paths crossing and for being on this journey with her.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
In college, my side hustle was I was a freelance makeup artist, that’s where I learned what business was, how to network and I used social media to promote my business. Shortly after I started managing my friends, classmates, and even organizations that I was a part of on social media accounts. I put myself out there by asking my friends who had businesses if I could manage their accounts. They knew I was studying communications and I spent all my time on social media. I really put myself out there and people just trusted that I knew what I was doing. No one else knew the strategies and the trends.I was giving ideas like try this, create this and that’s how I started.
I scaled it by joining Courtney and we jumped in feet first. We figured out our strengths and focused on that. In the past two years, we have worked with 30+ business owners, and we have just hired a new social media manager/ influencer manager to head our new Influencer department.
