We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful RaShawn Dixon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with RaShawn below.
Hi RaShawn, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
This was about 7 months into the Covid-19 pandemic. I received an email from an art director at the Mary Christie Foundation to see if I was interested in working on a cover for their Fall 2020 issue. The topic was focused on the mental health of black student athletes. I told the director yes and we moved on to brainstorming ideas she wanted to do for the cover.
She went over the specifics and I provided her with rough drafts of the cover. From there, she along with her team selected the sketch they were leaning towards and told me I could move on towards the final draft. Afterwards, she emailed me the link when the article went live on their website.
The art director contacted me again and I did two more covers for the Winter and Spring 2021 issues. This was a blessing and a grateful experience. This project also allowed me to look over my portfolio to see which field in the art industry I wanted to enter.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is RaShawn Dixon, I’m an illustrator and designer!
The mood of my work can go from vibrant to melancholy, depending on the overall theme of the piece.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is being able to create work that people can relate to. When I doodle in my sketchbook or work personal projects, I never know who it will touch when I post it to social media.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
It’s never too late and that everyone’s path is different. I can’t compare myself to others. Everyone has a different skill set and a different path to take.
