Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rashaun Robinson . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rashaun, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
One thing about being an artist is you feel alone about 79% of the time. A lot of creatives have trouble socilally expressing themselves so they use art to kind of vent out those frustrations. Unfortunately, not everyone takes the time to attempt to understand where the art is actually coming from. They don’t know that most artist created their best work when they are going through a hard time in their life. That’s where I feel like a lot of artist are misunderstood.
Rashaun, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Rashaun Robinson and I identify myself as a painter, artist, and clothing designer for my brand CrunchyRiot TM. I first started designing my own clothes around the age of 17 while I was still in high school. I specialize in 1 of 1 customizations where I’m able to have full creative freedom while designing for a client, however I’m also working with local printing shops to get certain projects completed that require mass production. What sets me apart from other artist is I’m able to trust my creative instincts more than most and apply a clients personality/interest as inspiration while completing 1 of 1 customizations. I’m also working on trying to expand my audience and work with not just other artist but anyone who is hardworking in any industry and believes my brand compliments their personality.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
What a lot of non creatives struggle to understand about the journey as a creator is that not everything came overnight. I’ve been pursuing this for about 8 years and a lot of people don’t get to see all the hard work that it takes to just get to where I’m at now; quite frankly I’m still not close to where I want to be. I’m really trying to be successful in my own way with my brand without having to take shortcuts. I know a few talented people who start creating but then they enter a situation, get stuck in “creatives block” and stop creating because they realize it takes a lot of patience along with a lot of life lessons. Things you really want never come over night, any one who wants to be good at anything should know it takes consistency and being coachable ~ learning from other people.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’d say it’s a good feeling whenever I see any of my clients/friends wearing my brand. Whenever I step out to a party or an event and I see someone wearing something I designed years prior it reminds me how powerful art actually is. When you like creating something and people like what you’re creating enough for them to wear it out in public, it can inspire you to want to make more. Sometimes all it takes is one person to wear your clothes to an event and now everyone wants to buy your product because they see it so often on other people who support your brand. There’s many other things I feel is rewarding, but importantly seeing how your creations can change how a person feels about themselves in a positive way, is what keeps me creating.
