Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rashane Elston. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rashane, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
First And Foremost I Want To Thank GOD And My Family & Friends For Supporting Me Also My Customers They Are The Reason My Business Is Such A Success Today. I started my business back in 2012-2013 which was the first year I actually started making custom items. At that time I was Was Graduating High School I really had no idea what I knew how to do or even what’s I planned on doing with my life. I Alway describe my story as a overnight success story because truly that’s what it was.I just getting into fashion as far as dressing different I use to go to thrift store every single day even if I didn’t have nothing but $2 in my pocket I would spend that last $2 on a item of clothing that I could make a outfit out of. My Favorite Past-time Was watching Project Runway Which is funny because I didn’t even know how to use a sewing machine so I was watching these shows getting new ideas and I would hand-sew them So I was taking shirts and making dresses out of them or sewing fabric to my jackets and things like that. So Shoutout My uncle Bubba He Was The First Person To Really Notice My Talent So He Bought me my very first sewing Machine from the thift store for about $20 which I ended up breaking The First Time I Tried To Use It. After That I Continued To Handsew And Started Posting My Projects On Social Media.I Believe My Very First Order From A Customer If I Remember Correctly Was Either A Toddlers Pair Of Jeans That They Wanted Patched Sew On Or It was The Breast Cancer Adult Shirt They Wanted Me To Make Into A Toddlers Dress. After That I Immediately Took Off, I Got Into Watching YouTube And More Fashion Show Series Gaining More Orders. After Noticing How Much Attention I Was Getting From People I Decided To Start My Business At That Time It Called It “Fly Society”. Myself And A Friend Decided To Make Shirts,Bandanas,And Hats In Order To Promote Myself. I Was Also Into Photography So I Use To Drive My Neon Around With Shirts And Other Items In My Truck And Whoever I Saw I Was Give them my shirts and take pictures of them and with them to post on social Media. As my brand continued to grow I was gaining more and more attention to my business I started to do more customs items I was asked to make custom dyed blazers for prom which was a major hit in Gadsden the area I live in.Also another popular item I was selling were Custom Glitter Timberlands boots and Jordan’s i was doing those for $20 a pair. I slowed down my business for a while to go work on the road as a contractor although I wasn’t doing as much custom clothes at that time I was still able to do my photography so I had the chance to do Alot of my modeling while working state to state. I not only modeled but I shot a few big names one in particular by the name of JahDiah who was a YouTube sensation. So after two years of working on the road I eventually came back home I eventually ended changing my Business name to “Legacy Black Label” I Had the chance to showcase my work in my first fashion show also had the Chance to send my work Off to So models In georgia Who Showcased my work on their platform as well. As the Years went by I invested in more equipment ,I was showcased in two more fashion shows, interviewed by a fashion magazine editor As well as a popular radio host, gained over 80k Followers Spread out over all my platforms. As Of today Feb 2023 I’ve had the opportunity to create custom work for several celebrities such as (Glorilla,Big Boogie,Big Yavo,Gloss And More ..I’ve worked as a Actress on the set on a YouTube series called “Pandoras Box” I put out consistent viral work reach about 30k views weekly to my pages. I represent myself as A Fashion Designer,Stylist,Photographer,Model And All Around Artist. I Also Rebranded Myself And Business In 2020 I Now Go By The Name “MYESIA ZHANAY” Which Is My Middle Name It Was The Best Fit To Describe My Individuality.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was introduced into fashion my 11th grade year. The School I went to at the time everyone dressed crazy like in good way .although I was always into dressing tomboyish I was fully comfortable with trying new things. As I started to get into fashion and the idea to express myself through my clothes it became more comfortable for me. My Nanna took me to a thrift store with her and as I stated the kids I went to school with were dressing freely so I started buying Me pieces from the thrift store to make outfits. From the moment I started my business back in 2012-2013 I have been consistently growing and perfecting my Craft.I am most proud of that consistency..people don’t speak on how hard it is to stay consistent for so long you have to get through the failures, the money loss, the sleepless nights. 10 years into this and I’m still not exactly where I want to be but I’m further than where I use to be so that’s what keeps me going.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The absolute best source of new clients for me definitely came from TikTok and Facebook.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I would say self promotion every single day I make 2-3 posts or either 1 or all of my social medias promoting my business. It doesn’t matter if the work is old or new or if I get 1 like or 1000 I post my work every single day.
