We recently connected with Rashae Glover and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rashae, thanks for joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Overall, yes I’m happy as a business owner but there are some days where my emotions are on a roller coaster ride. A lot of days I’m mentally and physically exhausted and I have to put those emotions on hold in order to continue business. I think the toughest part of it all is pretending to not be human with bad days because you feel the pressure to present joy and excitement within each customer experience. My rule of thumb is to keep a sense of balance between work and life. Having the freedom to create income while bringing joy to my clients make the sacrifices worthwhile.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My introduction to travel started at a very young age and as I got older it became an essential part of me. Starting my own travel business was an extension of my love for exploration. I initially started in this industry by being the person who planned/organized vacations for my family and friends. I found joy and fun in doing it and decided to turn it into a business. The travel industry is HUGE but I purposely promote my business in a way that stands out to my targeted audience. I have never been a person who liked to blend in and be apart of the trendy topic of the day. I like to be unique, creatively-driven and be able to allow myself to think outside of the box. I’ve had to do may trial and error runs but I found what works for me. My biggest accomplishment so far within my business is being able to be resilient in the face of disaster. Plans change, clients cancel and I have to be the face of resolution no matter what happens. This can be frustrating but I never let it keep me away from doing good business. I always make sure to go the extra mile for anyone who chooses to do business with me.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building a core audience on social media is TOUGH but I managed to find a structure that works for my business. I learned through trial and error that my audience reacts the most to travel imagination. I create content that allows my clients to imagine themselves experiencing the vacations I present online. This method sparks their interest and creates conversation online and leads to business inquiries.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn is projecting my upbringing on my client’s financial situation/budgets. I grew around middle-class citizens who’s idea of luxury is simply being able to afford rent. This created a sensitive side of me when I would tailor vacation packages. I would look for the lowest “best-rated” option. My clients would kick it back and want upgrades, personal chefs, etc. All of the things that I thought would probably be too expensive because my personal experience. I had to realize that I could not assume nor predict a client’s situation and that people will pay for the things that they want no matter what it costs. I structured my business accordingly.
