We were lucky to catch up with Rashad Lance recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rashad thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I used to believe that my mark on the world needed to be something tangible, like a grand building or a huge poster. However, my experiences in the modeling industry shifted my viewpoint. Everything that is created, posted, or built is destined to fade away eventually. Now, I believe the true essence of our existence lies in the memories we forge with others—good or bad—and that authentic human connections. I love hats and just happen to be amazing at creating them, so when people light up from seeing my art, I genuinely appreciate it. So for now, I find joy in the idea that my legacy can be as simple as the memories I leave with others, and hopefully, they can carry that kindness with them while wearing a great fucken hat by yours truly.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in Brownsville, an experience that was as unique as it was challenging. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to attend a private boarding school in Connecticut. While there, I joined the basketball team, and one of my teammates had an aunt who owned a hat shop on 5th Avenue. She offered us work during the holidays and school breaks, so I decided to head back home and earn some extra cash before school would resume. That is where my journey into the world of millinery began. I found myself immersed in a creative environment filled with talented milliners and stylists, learning the ins and outs of the trade.
In that shop, I not only gained business acumen but also got my first break in modeling, all while being exposed to a rich tapestry of races, cultures, and religions—united by our shared passion for hats. Outside of work, I juggled four sports, my studies, workouts, and painting, constantly navigating through contrasting environments marked by both beauty and hardship. Yet, through it all, one constant remained: I was enveloped in love and support.
During my time at the shop, I had the privilege of working alongside some of the industry’s best, including Marc Williamson, Ryan Wildes, and Van Huyn. Their expertise made it nearly impossible not to take interest. Now, with over 12 years of experience in both the hat and modeling industries, I have merged my love for fine arts and fashion with my millinery skills to craft distinctive luxury pieces.
Throughout the years, I’ve refined my craft and designed countless unique hats for a diverse range of clients, including TV shows and celebrities. At Fear The Brim, we are dedicated to promoting brim repairs and customizations as part of our commitment to a more sustainable fashion future. We aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the fashion industry while ensuring our clients always look their best, believing firmly that quality should endure for a lifetime.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my style played a significant role in shaping my reputation in my field. From a young age, I developed a keen interest in fashion and art, but it was my dedication to my personal appearance that truly stood out. I realized early on that I represent my own brand, which motivated me to conduct myself in a way that reflects that understanding. This mindset fostered the development of positive habits and instilled a sense of discipline in my life.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I’ve found that one of the most effective strategies is simply to wear my creations. It’s much easier to demonstrate than to explain, and I make a point to sport a brim wherever I go. Since I’m going to showcase my art regardless, I thought, why not carry some business cards along with me? It’s a great way to combine passion with practicality! While also not havi by not stop every 15 mins and answer repetitive questions. Its hard to get shit done when you’re constantly getting stopped lol
