We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Raphaël Dargent a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Raphaël, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
During the past year I’ve been blessed to work on a lot of great films. Among them, the captivating documentary “Why Dinosaurs” stands out, set to premiere this November at the Harmony Gold theater in Hollywood. It showcases one of my most accomplished orchestral scores to date. I’ve also really enjoyed composing for the thrilling feature films “Silent as the Grave,” released on Prime Video this summer, and “The Actor,” directed by Richard Blake and set for release in 2024. Both films feature tension-filled scores infused with a jazz twist.
Raphaël, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve started working as a film composer in Paris while I was still studying business. It quickly became clear to me I wanted to give this career route a shot and in 2018, I moved to Los Angeles where I got my screen scoring master at USC. This enabled me to start my business with a small network of very talented people from the film industry which grew over the years. In addition to this, I’ve put huge efforts into expanding my creative opportunities by actively reaching out to producers and filmmakers whose work deeply resonates with me. I am entirely devoted to bringing their projects to life by creating original and unique soundtracks that capture their emotional essence.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being an artist can be struggling at some times, but it certainly helps me to live a coherent life filled with meaning. I try to fill all my actions with intention and purpose, harmoniously aligned with my perspective of the world and my personal interpretation of beauty. What truly brings me joy is the profound connection that emerges when others resonate with my music and embrace these views, creating a shared understanding and appreciation of what we have in common.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I think I might have underestimated how much it matters to be passionate about other things than your art. Over the past decade, I have cultivated a profound fascination with subjects such as physics, quantum mechanics, philosophy, and sports. Although these topics can feel disconnected from music, they actually participate in changing your relationship to the world and how you see it. Whenever I feel creatively low, I’ll try to do anything but music to recharge that urge to compose.
