We were lucky to catch up with Randy Naidoo M.D. FAAP, ABIHM recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Randy, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Many people are not aware of my faith journey. You will hear me say a lot about how a right spirit will direct the soul and the soul will direct the flesh. And vice versa, a right flesh will direct the soul to being open to the right spirit. We can also state that if we are drinking a cup of water and we pour juice or milk or any other liquid into that water, the taste will not be the same as drinking that pure liquid not mixed with any other liquid. The Holy Spirit is looking to fill our spirit but the Holy Spirit can’t mix with your earthly will of a man or woman. The taste is watered down. So in 2006, that was a defining moment for me. I had just completed my pediatric residency at Children’s Dallas and my father passed away from a 5 year battle with colon cancer. They say trials and tribulations build character. During this time, my will was pretty broken. It was supposed to be an exciting time of finishing another chapter in my life but yet there was the incompleteness of not having my father. Little did I know, a Heavenly Father was going to be a part of my life. In July 2006, the Holy Spirit found me and became a part of my will. It changed my complete understanding of medicine and it was like I saw all of my training and education through a different lens. I saw physiology different and I saw the pathophysiology of disease differently. My world was turned upside down. I began to ask the question of how do we get our bodies to be in alignment with how God created us? The further we move away from that alignment with God, the more miserable we feel and the more doctor visits and medications and surgeries and specialists we will need. Don’t get me wrong, we need physicians and the healthcare but somewhere along the way, we have lost the integrity of the Holy Spirit and now we have numerous physicians and healthcare providers and systems that are so secular and atheistic or agnostic that the spiritual guidance needed for humility and balance in the care of the patient has been lost. Medicine begins to take the place of God and that is NEVER a good thing. It creates more chaos. SHINE can be a leader in the delivery of pediatric medicine because of the balance that I provide as owner and founder. We must train future physicians and advanced healthcare providers along with supporting staff such as nurses, medical assistants, LVNs. along with front office staff and billing services and other administrative staff that our job is to be a bridge from what God does in the spiritual to what man or woman does with the flesh. We must have discernment and wisdom when to give a medication or other conventional process like a test or referral versus giving families affirmation that things are going to be okay and this is not a disease or health problem. It’s a spiritual or soul issue and this takes time to work out. No amount of medication or supplements is going to address it.
We see so many families going through domestic issues that many do not even see that it is during this time of turmoil that he or she is seeing us multiple times a month or a year. A major part of medicine is to run the right test at the right time and if the workup comes back negative and you as a provider are confident in the understanding of how the human body works, to let that family know, you are well and go on your way. Stop trying to find a physician to help you with something that is a spiritual disconnect.
And lastly, as healers of the human body, a term that is forgotten about 90% of the time is “iatrogenic”. What in the world does that mean? Induced unintentionally in a patient by a physician. Induced by the words or actions of the physician.
We may be causing our patient’s DIS-EASE and if we are not spiritually discerning, we will not be able to see the gaps in our training and knowledge that is causing the ailments of our patients.
We must seek God first in all that we do and especially as healers of the body with some of the highest intellect in society.
Randy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Again it’s all a God thing. I can’t take all the credit. I left high school, ranked 3rd in my class of around 450 students. I grew up in Garland in a middle class family where we had the necessities of life and Christmas, your birthday, and back to school shopping were the only times you could ask for something extra regarding clothes, toys or other things. As a first generation American, I was not going to let my parents down with the many sacrifices it took for them to move to a new country. Being born in the U.S. and being a proud citizen was a lot of the back story. I was going to be successful at something, no matter what I was going to put my hands and mind to doing. I thought I was going to play football in the NFL and when my career in football ended at the University of Miami after three years and the NFL calling my name for a future, I had to take a detour. I still did very well in college with a 3.8 GPA, Biomedical Engineering degree with Honors and high enough MCAT scores to get into medical school. So I chose to press forward as a physician and more importantly, I knew early on that I loved children, I loved working with them and being around them and I am a big kid at heart myself. So I know despite having great grades and USMLE scores that I could have been in a specialty profession such as Pediatric Surgery or Orthopedic physician because of my prior athletic career, I was pretty clear in my path with working with children. If the U.S. Air Force had not paid my way through medical school, I probably would have tried to do a residency in Pediatrics, Pediatric Neurology and Pediatric Psychiatry but the Air Force was not willing for me to do 5 years of residency and wanted me to practice in 3 years. I always had this yearning to learn more than my colleagues and I never wanted to miss the most rare disease or ailment. So with all of my motivation to learn, I fulfilled my pediatric residency in 2006 but as I stated above, God had a different plan on what He wanted out of me with pediatrics. I have been humbled to know that even with all of my knowledge about the human condition, God always has a way of exposing me to the underground world of knowledge that reveals more and more truths that conventional medicine just cant bring to light. Maybe when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. And maybe that is where I am in life now, its like I just know when I am learning something that is in alignment with how God wants me to take care of a patient.
We at SHINE are developing systems and mindsets on how to deal with complex health issues that are chronic in nature with children while also learning and understanding how to keep the newborn healthy until they are 21 years old. We have to learn how to navigate the laws of the land while fulfilling the requirements of school in the public and private sector and giving families options in the care of their child. Whether that means more natural approaches such as nutrition alone or in combo with certain supplements or nutritional aides or whether it means homeopathy, herbals, essential oils or whether it means a referral to a energy medicine healer, naturopath, homeopath, chiropractor, or other non-conventional provider or whether it means a referral to a subspecialist in pediatrics who has more of an integrative approach to us as medical providers at SHINE to put on our thinking caps to order the right type of test or recommend the right medication or supplement to get a patient’s life turned around from a flesh or bodily issue
SHINE is known for a lot from being conscientious about how we conduct the vaccine process to helping care for children with tough neurological conditions to handling some of the most challenging skin conditions and gut concerns, our word of mouth from one parent to another parents speaks for itself. But I think you can see from everything above, how we solve these issues comes from a God centered approach.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Simply put, no matter how much hard work and effort you put into something, work will definitely reap a harvest. That harvest may not always be what you expect. But more than the hard work, the sooner you find your purpose in life and what God created you to be is the lesson., All of that energy and hard work you put in may not always bring you the harvest you want but it’s not about the harvest, it’s about the purpose behind it. The ultimate harvest is somewhere down the future and you will be okay with patience and persistence no matter the outcome because you are in God’s will. So work hard with God giving you a purpose. If you don’t have a purpose, spend more time on the purpose but ALWAYS work hard.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I like to take away the “me” or “I” and say “us” or “we”. We have been humbled by what it takes to do great things. Doing great things is about teams. Doing great things takes groups of people of all walks of life and backgrounds and past experiences and culture differences and so much more to work toward a vision, a mission, a culture. When everyone can see that final destination even though you cannot see it that day or that week or that month or year but you can get the team to strive for that which is not seen, then you know you are doing something great. At SHINE, we are doing something great because the parent can see the life of vitality in their child’s development, the look in their eyes, the pep in their step, the alertness of mind, the fortitude of their immune system, the resilience of health over disease and the empowerment of the family to handle to stress and disease while removing fear and doubt.
