We were lucky to catch up with Randy Kauk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Randy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I have been working in the medical profession for 14 years, working in neurosurgery, pain & addiction management, and orthopedic surgery. While working at Mayo Clinic Hospital, I obtained my MSN degree to become a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner. I found it hard to schedule aesthetic treatments as a busy professional because medical spas were not open in the evening or on the weekends. I have always been interested in the wellness side of medicine and have a passion for aesthetics, so I decided to open my own medical aesthetics practice offering evening and weekend hours. This began my dive into working for myself and pursuing my dreams. Opening my very own medical and wellness spa was a dream that has become an entrepreneurial journey.
The most challenging part is learning the business side of being a practice owner. I wish I had known more about the background things, like starting an LLC, getting insurance, finding a space, taxes, and legal aspects of business. I would encourage anyone who wants to go out on their own to first establish their brand, know their niche audience, and develop a business plan. Next the fun part of finding a space and making it reflect your brand.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The essence of my company and my practice is that every client deserves to look and feel their best. I believe medical aesthetics should be used to help clients feel and look their best at any age. Natural beauty and grace are part of the foundation of a client’s confidence, and medical aesthetics builds upon this foundation to provide enhancements or help stop the toll of time and aging. I believe in refreshing and enhancing my client’s natural beauty for a timeless appearance. Skincare and wellness also play an essential role in maintaining a positive impression. In addition to aesthetic treatments, I offer wellness treatments, medical-grade skincare, and supervised weight-loss programs. My experience as a medical provider allows me to treat the whole client and ensure they are at their highest level of wellness on the inside and outside because beauty is more than skin deep.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I was very sure i would be successful. I had the thought if you build it, they will come. They did not. I had the normal first clients who were friends and family, but that did not last very long. I had to learn how to market myself and my business. Marketing can be very daunting and complex. Marketing and putting yourself out there has been more difficult than actually injecting or treating clients.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back, I may have been a physician, but I feel the nursing background has helped me relate more to clients as people, not problems. Working in medical aesthetics and wellness, a whole-person approach is just as important as the training. There is a saying that nurse practitioners have the brains of a doctor and the heart of a nurse, so I feel it turned out to be the best profession for me.
