We recently connected with Randy Jimenez and have shared our conversation below.
Randy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
During my journey on YouTube, I faced a lot of adversity, especially throughout high school. Back when I first started YouTube, before I had 10,000 subscribers there was a group of kids who would always play my videos out loud trying to embarrass me. They would always make fun of me to my face, tell me to “stop click-baiting”, to quit YouTube, and other things like that to get a reaction out of me. These were the same people that I considered my friends, and they did it to me out of nowhere. I felt very annoyed by this, and I was almost about to quit making videos. There was a point in time in 2018 when people in school would make fun of my videos, right after my mom had passed away. I had so much going on in my head to the point where I was sick and tired of hearing them say this stuff to me, so I took down all of my videos for about a month.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Randy Jimenez, and my YouTube channel is named RipItRandy. I play the NBA 2K basketball video game and post gameplay content on my YouTube channel where I complete different challenges on the game. I moved from Florida to Georgia in 2015, to begin high school. I had no friends in Georgia at the time, so the only thing I could resort to was playing video games with my brother Josh. Around this time, I fell in love with NBA 2K, where I would play with my brother every day after school. I played the game so much, to the point where I began to watch YouTube videos about how to get good at the game, and videos to entertain myself. I began watching YouTubers like ThatKiddKuda, Jesser, CashNasty, StaxMontana, and other guys like that, and I thought to myself: “If they can make a living doing this, why can’t I give it a try?” So on January 21, 2016, I recorded my first video on my Playstation 4, used my parents’ 2009 MacBook Pro to edit and post my first video, and the rest is history. I am super grateful that I can use my platform to spread positivity, and make people laugh by just playing a video game.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect about being a creative is the fact that I can be myself in my videos, and people still enjoy them. When I first started making videos, I forced a certain type of energy because I was nervous being on camera. Now that I’ve been making videos for 6 years, it’s been very easy to be myself on camera and not worry about what anyone thinks about me.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I just try to make my family proud and prove everyone wrong who doubted me and made fun of me back in high school.
