Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Randy Griffith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Randy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
When I was a teenager, I was asked to do a commission painting of a riverboat. I completed it and was paid for the job. Many years later someone sent me a picture of it on Facebook and reminded me that I had done the painting for her parents. Her parents had since passed but she still had the painting after all those years.

Randy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
With the inspiration of an uncle who is artist as small child, I started drawing everything I could find. I soon started painting landscapes and in still life or whatever inspired me. Through the years I took on any job that involved using creative resources including graphic design and sign making but painting and fine art has always been my passion. I now work primarily in watercolor and oil paint. After building an inventory of work, I created prints of my work that I sell on my Etsy store and now sell them all over the country. I also do craft markets and pop up stores. I have also joined local arts organizations to display my prints and paintings.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I always start with a simple idea or image and then do rough sketches from reference photos and other resources. I then refine it to a final drawing and then begin painting. I think the most rewarding part of being an artist is in having an idea for a painting and being able to bring the idea to life with pencil and paint. When someone understands your vision and displays it in their home or office it is very gratifying.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I think that the age of social media and digital media has been a great tool for all creatives. I would have loved to have had these resources available in the beginning. As artists we now have the resources to reach a wide audience that wasn’t available in years past.
