We were lucky to catch up with Randy Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Randy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My past serves as a back drop to my desire to speak and coach. While working as a Div. I men’s college basketball coach for 20 I learned to take the victory with defeat.
In life thought, it’s not quite that easy. Some of life’s “big hurts” are difficult to understand and respond to.
Fortunately for me, I’ve been able to work through a lot of adversity, grief, and pain; at times I thought it would never stop.
I endured the death of two four-year old daughters, depression, addiction, prison, divorce, and the loss of a life-time profession as a college coach. Yet, my desire to live a full and giving life propelled me to speak and coach men through the difficulties of their lives. I’ve been there and I can share the story that will warm them before it’s too late.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My brand is based on living the optimal life by breaking free from your inner prison. It’s built on the ability to defeat adversity with resilience, proper response, and creating healthy habits for life. My main message deals with great highs and tragic lows, children’s death, depression, addictive/soothing behaviors, prison, divorce, and a miraculous rebound from it all. Three pillars that relate to those who experience adversity are perspective, response, and finding the key to unlock yourself from your own prison and usher in a new life.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When my life hit bottom due to poor decisions I had made, there became a clear choice in front of me. One was to merely live out life in mediocrity and exist. That choice never appealed to me. The second was to trust my faith and know that the things that had happened in life, as difficult as they were, signaled to me that God wasn’t done with me yet. In fact the sign from God was clear. That was to use all I had leaned and gained through the fires of adversity to reclaim my life and broadcast my story to those who could benefit from it. Once that became clear, the rest of my life took on a new life, energy, and vigor. The goal now is to help others learn how valuable transparency is and to take responsibility for everything in my power.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The three main sources of inspiration and truth come from the Bible, The Purpose Driven Life, and Man’s Search for Meaning. The lessons in all three books are the path to living a life free of deceit and falsehood. The truth for life lives in the pages of those books.
