We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Randy Brady. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Randy below.
Hi Randy, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
When I stopped throwing house parties, I became driven to find a way to throw outdoor events with live bands and DJs. I wanted to start at a park close by but I also wanted to bring people to where the bands would be. While networking and scouting for locations around the San Fernando Valley, I met a friend at a show. I told him I wanted to bring more park events to our area and he seemed into it. I had mentioned to my new acquaintance that I was inviting people to events via my personal Facebook page. (Facebook Events was a thing at the time and it was a great way to bring people out to shows or spread the word.) He immediately shook his head. You need a name for this. I told him that the original event company name I thought of was taken and trademarked by a group of greedy individuals. He had mentioned some suggestions and after assessing my situation and goals, the name Gravity Booking came up. Something was off. To be throwing multiple shows on earth, making artists feel like kings, all while attracting an empire, it had to be Gravity Bookings.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a songwriter, guitar player and an avid music listener. I listen to all genres from various artists. The music can be new or old as long as it’s inspiring. I got into booking out of a need for new type of musical outlet. The Sunset Strip kept ripping off my high school band back in the day and I had enough of the “pay to play” scam. I wanted something organic. As the years went by, I noticed that being musically savvy helped me understand the artists’ perspective when booking shows. Most times, I reach out to music venues for bands while building a lineup that I believe will succeed. Once the team establishes a lineup and date, we have our talented graphic designers make a flyer for the ticket link and we get promotion going with the bands/artists. Social media posts and flyers help get the word out. I love to represent new talent, and always look forward to assisting inspired artists.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Being there. Going out to the shows, whether it been weekend or weekday. I think that showing respect face to face is the most effective way to communicate. I love going to events, paying the entry and talking to the new acts any chance I get!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I could give a list for days but definitely most bio pics, autobiographies and lectures online I find give insight on ways to succeed. When I was younger I read Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” and that became a driving force again recently. Also, “Sellout” by Dan Ozzi has really put me in a great head space on the quest to building a better music industry. I just love learning from history, because like they say, it tends to repeat itself.
