We recently connected with Randi Dukes and have shared our conversation below.
Randi, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I manage my own social media accounts and I always have. I made the decision to do it myself because I’m in a very client-focused business and I want to make sure my online presence matches my real-life presence. I also wanted to be able to evaluate what was working and generating engagement. It can be a bit time consuming but I simplify it by scheduling in batches each week and then taking a few minutes every day to respond to comments. My social media growth has been slow and steady but I feel like the people that follow my accounts are genuinely interested in what I have to share.
I would tell other business owners not to overthink it too much. Done is better than perfect and you can continue to grow and modify as you see what people respond to. But if you absolutely can’t manage it on your own, go ahead and hire someone. In our current culture, social proof is important.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been a real estate agent for four years. I was previously a nurse and then a digital influencer before deciding to get into real estate. I’m a single mom of five kids and liked the idea of working in a career that had unlimited growth potential but was also somewhat flexible. I’ve always loved looking at houses and I knew I would enjoy helping clients through the process of buying or selling a home. And skills from my past careers have really helped me in real estate. I use critical thinking, troubleshooting, negotiating, and social media marketing every day.
I love the relational side of real estate. It’s such an honor to be able to help someone make a huge life transition, like buying or selling a house. There’s a lot of coaching and educating involved and that’s where the true relationship-building comes in. When a transaction ends, I really miss the frequent conversations! I feel a large sense of responsibility to guide my clients well and get them the outcome they want or need.
In addition to a standard real estate license, I’m also a divorce real estate specialist. When I went through my own divorce a number of years ago, I realized how important the marital assets were for my future. As a divorce real estate agent, I help clients come up with a housing strategy that works for both parties, and help them navigate the emotions while remaining neutral throughout. Divorce can be such a difficult journey and my goal is to alleviate some of the stress on the real estate side.
I love being a real estate agent and I love meeting so many different people. My life is truly richer because of it!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I spend a lot of time working on social media and marketing strategies but the single most effective strategy for growing my clientele is doing my job well. It sounds so simple but when you communicate well, take pride in your work, and put effort into your job, people notice. They enjoy working with you so they come back when they need your services again and they tell their friends about you. There’s no greater compliment than getting referrals from people you’ve worked with.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I have a lot of different strategies for keeping in touch with clients {a monthly newsletter, a magazine campaign, birthday cards, houseiversary cards} but one of my favorite things to do is mail a handwritten note. Finding something in your mailbox besides bills makes a real impact on people especially in a time when it’s so rare to find that. I send a few notes every week, always for an authentic reason, but it could be almost anything. And sometimes it’s for nothing – just a note to tell someone I’m thinking about them. Cute cards, a sweet message, a cute stamp, and five minutes or less is all it takes to brighten someone’s day.
