We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Randi Coffman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Randi below.
Randi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, Hello, My name is Randi Coffman. I own Ritual Queen Beauty where I provide paramedical, cosmetic makeup tattooing, microblading. That includes 3d areola tattooing, scar camouflage with ink. I also provide lash extensions, lash lifts , brow laminations and facials.
Since I was little I was pretty obsessed with hair and loved to play with it. I loved cross stitching, and embroidery as a small child.
I was a professional cake decorator for 10 years out of high school and then went to esthetician and nail school 21 years ago.
I love to work with my hands and have a love for small details and create art. The more detailed the art the more I love it.
I am very proud that my long fun career has taken me to doing cosmetic makeup. This is my heart’s work.
Doing tattooed brows and 3d areola’s are challenging, they are sisters not twins, The body gives me an uneven canvas 99% of the time, no one is asymmetrical.
It takes expertise, patience and precision to find the best solution for my clients.
My experience allows me to achieve a natural timeless look . I put a lot of my art history, color theory education and experience into this work.
I know that my experience in the field of 21 years sets me apart.
I do not use any type of stencil or over do the brows. My style is more conservative and natural, Less is more and we can always add more of follow up appointments.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The main thing I would have done differently would have been is to have hired a business coach earlier than I did. Although there were not a lot of business coaches out for hair and esthetics till the past 7 years or so I wish I would have joined a mentorship sooner. I have a business coach now that blows my mind. She was an esthetician for 20 years in New york and her stories and her coaching is so perfect for me. You do have to find the right business coach, Ive tried a few before and did not align with their methods of coaching which set me back further. April Meese is my coach and I cant recommend her enough!
The reason I wish I had went with a mentor/coach sooner is I’ve gotten so much direction of how I should be going about my goals and prioritizing them. As a business owner I did it by myself for a long time and just making it up and I went without a goal. I could have made a lot more money had I had a coach.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Where do I start? Being in this field for a long time, I have switched my niche and pivoted many times. I was in the Aveda world for years and focused on facials and waxing and teaching.
I worked for an Aveda lifestyle salon and we had to pay into our education funds every week, which was a lot when you are just starting out, but in hindsight it was the smartest investment account Ive ever had.
I remember when lash extensions came around to the scene. I was so intrigued and had to take a class, which was a really expensive class back when it first came out, I was able to take that class with my saved education fund. I grew into a whole different niche eventually with providing Lash extensions. after leaving Aveda I took that education fund rule and never stoped growing the fund so I could never say I wanna take that class but I can not afford it.
Many years later I started seeing permanent makeup being reborn, the equipment, the pigments , the education changing for the best, I knew I had to go that route. That was a very expensive class because you need to get certified in pmu in the state of Colorado. I jumped into that class and worked my ass off to learn that new skill which took a lot of further trainings out side of the initial training. I would say I spent 20,000.00 on it in total now. That was my most challenging pivot, But here I am not primarily just offering pmu services, and couldn’t be happier.
