We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Randall Porter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Randall, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My family has the type of relationship that no matter what, we say “I love you baby” and move on. That’s just it in my career recently. If something happens that is not serving me, I say “I love you baby” and move on. If we need space that is how it is. But know there is always major love there. I think also allowing me to figure out my own was what I think my parents did right. Whether it was intentional on their part or not.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
God, you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t going to be the next big thing in music growing up. Everything for me was music, then. I wanted to be a singer so bad. Hell, I was a musician. However, I let a lot of people tell me what type of musician I could or couldn’t be and let that get to me.I truly think I am destined to entertain people; we are still working on what medium that would be through though. Who is Randall Porter? Randall Porter is style. It’s as simple as that. LOL But seriously, for me, personal style is about more than just clothes, it’s about empowerment. I know when I wake up in the morning, make my bed, and put something I feel confident in that shows in my actions and work. That is what I want to do – educate, share, and influence culture. I hope my influence helps others have confidence to fulfill their purpose. I want everyone to know they are worthy and feel that. That is who I am.
What have been the top 3 highlights of your career?
My entire career is a highlight reel. Even the absolute lowest moments where my paychecks were bouncing or I was laid off or I was stranded in a retail market for 10 hours with no food because our product didn’t show up. It all mattered. It was all important for me to experience in order to fully understand and be confident in what I wanted moving forward. I am not afraid of talking about the pivotal and difficult things in my career that aren’t typically considered highlights because this, this is what made me.
Becoming the Fashion Editor and Event Manager of Good Grit Magazine was a time in my life I am most proud of. At 25, I was living my creative dream and incredibly thankful to be in a fulfilling position that most people in this line of work do not accomplish until much later in their career.
During my role as the Director of Brand Communications for Aviate, it was surreal to watch everyone around us, no matter the state, wearing the product I helped create. We constantly received photos of musicians, actors, CEOs and professional athletes wearing our product across the world. Knowing that I had a huge part in the growth and success of that brand for me was incredibly fulfilling.
What’s part of your career you dislike? In this type of work, people do not always understand your worth…because the work seems glamorous or lucky on the outside, people assume that it is easy. That could not be further from the truth. I am always feeding into my career. If I am out to dinner and someone walks up to me and I ask them how or what they are doing, this becomes a new opportunity to help inspire, style and curate their greatness. The work never stops and it is incredibly underpaid but it fulfills me.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For 7 years, I have spent most of my professional career catering to someone else’s dream or goals. All of my former employers taught me so much and I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything, respectively. BUT Like most creative jobs in the start-up world, I wasn’t getting paid enough nor did I know my worth. As 2020 was about to hit us with what it did, everything changed for me. Becoming my own boss wasn’t an easy decision but I am proof that it is very rewarding when you just keep striving. NOW, what do I do? I am a creator create events and support local artists and businesses through my platform and network base. I am a marketer, creating strategies for brands and planning stylish moments and events. My goal is to bring people together and expose them to unique places and experiences in Birmingham. If I had to put a title on it would be Cultural Curator. At the center of it all is Fashion. I am a huge advocate of how your personal style carries more power than people realize and I showcase that through my instagram and blog. My blog started as a way for me to showcase my style and love for my city but now has grown into so much more than that.My goal is to bring together the most interesting brands and artists from far and wide physically and digitally.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
To build your audience on social media, be intentional in everything that you do. Your niche is reflected in all that follows you. One of my favorite quotes is from Helena Bonham Carter that I think encompasses this well – “I think everything in life is art. What you do. How you dress. The way you love someone, and how you talk. Your smile and your personality. What you believe in, and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea. How you decorate your home. Or a party. Your grocery list. The food you make. How your writing looks. And the way you feel. Life is art.”
In today’s world, someone could ask you to host a party, create a cocktail, style a dinner or design a label. A Style + Culture expert means braiding that into every single moment of life and people loved when I shared that on my social media.
