We were lucky to catch up with Randall East recently and have shared our conversation below.
Randall, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
Most of the companies in the Managed Service Provider space, are first and foremost engineering companies. When they look at acquiring and supporting customers, they focus primarily on the technology they have used and understand. In most cases, this is the same technology they have been using since they entered the business. In some industries this might be a good thing. I believe this to be a bad thing in business technology support and cybersecurity. This method does not take into account the unique needs of the business, changing technology and evolving cybersecurity. This puts them in the position of trying to force the customer into a set of standards that aren’t best for the client and may be faulty in keeping them safe. WolfTech takes the approach of always looking for new ideas and ways to do things better for our clients. We take the needs of the client into account and make the technology work around the business. This means the client does not need to change critical business workflow which is the life blood of any business. The secondary upside to this is that many times the solution we provide is much less expensive and provides much better security at the same time.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My interest in technology goes back to my early days as a child. Technology has always fascinated me, especially in seeing what new ground can be broken and what things it can do for people that were impossible in the past. When the 80’s show Knight Rider came out, I was devoted fan. What fascinated me most about Knight Rider, was the ability for K.I.T.T to interact with Michael. A computer that could interact directly with its user to find out exactly what they need. Since K.I.T.T does not currently exist in reality, I wanted to understand both technology and busines, put those two together and be the K.I.T.T for my clients. I wanted to listen to how they do business, find out the technology needs and provide the perfect solution for them. After college I set out to do just that. Over the years I’ve worked in technical sales, managed support centers and started businesses. Now, years later, WolfTech is the culmination of everything that I’ve learned during my career. Listening to my clients, designing solutions that work for them, protecting them from threats and helping them to be more profitable and better businesses.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2014 the company I was working for at the time, decided they were going to scale back and let a number of employees go. After quickly evaluating the situation, I realized that this company was also letting a lot of its smaller business clients go, as they did not see them as profitable. This appeared to me to be a golden opportunity to service these clients. The day after I was let go, I started a company to support these smaller clients with technology needs. I started with just myself assisting these clients and continued to grow a business around it with no upfront capital, essentially starting from scratch. Over the years I continued to grow the business. When I finally left and started WolfTech in 2021, I had grown the business to several million in revenue and 19 employees. Yes hard work, vision and most importantly taking care of your customers does pay off.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first got out of college with my business management degree, I really wanted to work for a technology company. Since this was in 1995, my options were a little more limited than what they might be today. At first I was unable to find a job in the industry, so for about a year I worked for a small machine shop just outside of Detroit Michigan. During my time there, I learned how to drive a forklift, managed inventory, managed employees, setup presses, ran a lathe and much more. While it wasn’t in technology, that came the next year, it taught me that I can learn just about anything I need to make things work. Nothing is off limits if you just put in the time and have the will power to succeed.
