We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Randall Downs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Randall below.
Randall, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Loser’s Way Home is in the process of releasing a series of singles. The culmination of songs is loosely based on Randall’s (singer/songwriter) great-grandfather who, after losing his mother to tuberculosis and father to the sea, moved to the U.S. from Sweden as a teenager. Amazing stories unfolded throughout his life, and the hope is to capture them in song. Randall had the privilege to witness his great-grandfather become a U.S. citizen when 93 years old. The first two singles from the project are “Journey Begins” and “Immigrant Song.”
Also, Loser’s Way Home’s most recent release, “Velveteen,” was written for a Phoenix theater rendition of the Velveteen Rabbit.
Randall, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Loser’s Way Home is an indie folk-rock band. The group formed in Memphis in 2009, and now LWH is based in Phoenix. We have released 3 albums, multiple EPs and singles. It is a wonderful experience building a fanbase in the West.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The first goal is to create music that the band enjoys playing. Being relevant or trendy doesn’t matter if the creative team doesn’t enjoy the process. The second goal is to make music that resonates with the fan/listener. It is a gift from God to use music for connection with others.
Finding the balance between remaining true to LWH’s sound and pushing the creative boundaries is an exciting process. Every project is a blank slate with endless possibilities.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support local musicians. Loser’s Way Home has played in amazing venues and met incredible people along the way. Thank you to all our friends, family, and fans who support us.
Being a musician gives insight into the importance of supporting and promoting other friends’ music. If you are looking for fun opportunities, go support your local music scene.
