We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Randall Cole a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Randall, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I think I’ve always had an idea even as a child of who I wanted to be. I always loved watching movies and listening to music with my parents and siblings growing up, there was something so captivating about how much a movie or a song can change the way you think and give you a different perspective on life itself. I’ve always found that more valuable than other subjects in school but didn’t necessarily know how to make it a reality. As I got older I realized that this is something I have to do for myself, so that’s exactly what I did.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My dad gave me my very first camera when I was a teenager. Being that he was a photographer himself, I found it really inspiring to look at his work and just have the urge to make photo & video content of my own. At first it was just fun things like making Youtube / school videos with my friends and photos of interesting subjects, but as I got into my 20’s I noticed that people were starting to contact me about doing work for them. So eventually I took it upon myself to go all out and buy everything I needed to start a visual arts business (new camera, attachments, editing pc rig, software etc etc). Not only that, but thats really when I started to take more of a serious interest in modeling, acting and music as well. For my camera work, I do all of my own photography, videography and editing for clientele. I think that establishing an initial connection with each client is very important to me because as long as I know what vibe they’re looking for and a little about them, i’m able to get a better idea of how they would like their content to be produced rather than give them a cookie cutter product. I’m really proud of all of the work I do, I really make sure that it’s not only something they like, but it’s something I like as well before giving it to them. I like to put myself in place of other viewers so that they can take a look at something and be like “wow, that’s really unique”.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In high school, well at least in big public schools they always tell you that you HAVE to know what you want to do right out of graduation. While it is partially true, I also think that it’s kind of a bad ideology because no two kids are exactly the same. Some kids know that they want to go to college and get their job after but others had absolutely no idea as a teenager. I was really torn by that so I decided to study marketing and leave the creative stuff to the side for a while. It really wasn’t until about 26 that I realized I was pursuing something that I really didn’t want to do, I was just doing something to pay the bills and leaving very little time to focus on the things I loved. So I had to make the jump and take my life in it’s intended direction. It’s a hard balance but I know that i’m much happier doing all that I do now.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Myself, my inner happiness, my ambition and my dad. I lost my father in April of 2023 and he was always the one that told me to follow my dreams and to get paid for what you know. When I told him about what I was doing, that was the proudest I have ever seen him and I think about that every day.
