We recently connected with Ranae Call and have shared our conversation below.
Ranae, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
When I lost the bid to fly a cat named Sausage home to his remaining family after his owner passed away, all I could think about was if he made it there safe. Another transport company had snagged the job and time went on, with failed promises and Sausage still needing a ride by car or plane to California. The remaining human family of Sausage directly contacted me and asked if I could help get Sausage out of Colorado and explained that he still needed to be removed from the shelter and see a veterinarian. I was able to get him out of the shelter, provide an enriching foster home, and eventually fly Sausage to San Francisco where he now lives.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
If nobody else is providing a service that the community needs, how can you? That was my question to myself. With a lot of research and time, PawsClawsScales Transport LLC opened in Colorado in 2021. Providing safe and reliable rides and pet transport consulting to locals and beyond. The business itself has provided excellent solutions for an array of clients needs. Nurturing the human-animal bond is the focus of our company, and that is what sets us apart from other companies. We work alongside you and your veterinarian as an extension of how you care for your animal.
Most of all, I want the audience to know that almost anyone can start a business. If the idea has traction, you should step into action!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I graduated from college, it was mid-pandemic and my dream job at a museum sharing culture with others was not an option. Animal caretaking and animal welfare work crossed my mind as an option but I wasn’t sure how to get started. I realized that a lot of animals still needed to get to the veterinarian, despite car issues, weather, or disease. I thought, maybe the community needs a pet taxi system where animals who are not service animals can get from point A to point B. That’s where it all started. Since then, I’ve worked in rescues, shelters, advocacy programs, and most importantly, general medicine.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I dropped out of community college after completing only one semester. I was struggling to make ends meet and just couldn’t focus on school. I wanted to learn and make a career for myself eventually. It was incredibly painful to put my education on hold, I worked odd jobs, bust mostly delivered pizza. It made me feel trapped, because I knew I could be so much more. During those years out of school I took care of my mental health, aligned my goals, and came back stronger than ever. After community college, I went on to university with all of my credits transferring seamlessly. Because of my determination to succeed and my commitment to humans, I obtained two bachelors degrees. One in cultural anthropology and one in sociology.
