We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rana Coleman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rana , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
You’re welcome thank you! I came up with concept for the staffing division of my firm in 2017 although I didn’t fully launch until 2022. I was driven to start Rscoleman and Associates Staffing LLC because of the lack of diversity within the legal sector having been on the inside of it in every phase of my legal career a common theme was the lack of diversity specifically with black legal professionals whether it was a fellow attorney, law clerk, or paralegal we were never there so I did my research over the years made some business connections and decided to launch in Chicago IL although we do operate in all 50 states. Now our platform has over 50 firms who can post positions and find diverse black legal talent within the platform as well.
Rana , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I knew I would practice law and be in the legal field when I was 12 years old it has always been my passion and growing up my mom cultivated my dream by getting meinto law programs after school and giving me brochures about different types of law programs various schools offered. I grew up in Flint MI and attended the university of Detroit Mercy for my Bachelor’s in legal administration as well as my law degree. Rscoleman and Associates Staffing LLC serves as a bridge to assist with closing the diversity gap in the Legal industry for Black Attorneys Black Law students and black legal professionals ,our platform allows both those seeking positions in the legal field to be found by firms and corporations with legal departments it also allows firms in who are sincere in their diverse hiring efforts to find the right candidate for their needs. It directly helps a huge problem that affects the legal industry.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I have funded everything for Rscoleman and Associates Staffing LLC out of pocket and in doing so I’ve made new connections and currently we’re working on upgrading our website and implementing new services and events.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
A book that has impacted my Entrepreneurial thinking is Becoming by Michelle Obama. It helped me realize that as I evolved throughout the years that I was Becoming the woman who was meant to do this meant to make the needed change and remove the elephant in the room.
