We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ramzi and Sommer Arikat. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ramzi and Sommer below.
Ramzi and Sommer, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
Ramzi and I were both raised around entrepreneurial families. Both of our parents always owned their own small businesses as we grew up. Watching our families start, maintain, and eventually sell successful family businesses showed us that only true hard work and determination as well as so much self-motivation and support from the family were all key factors in their success. We wanted to instill those same morals and characteristics in our kids by showing them how our parents showed us the value of hard work.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We we’re both looking to expand our professional lives. At a time where we were just starting out as a young family, in a new city, and wanting to hone in on our shared passion of design we came up with the idea for Zedan Concepts. Through family contacts, we met a landscape installer who was looking for a designer to help him create designs for his current and new clients so that it would make his install business a much more effective one. With Ramzi’s skill of design – being trained as an architect and working as a space planner and along with my experience in the finance world we decided to start a business together that could act as our “passion project.” We’d just moved to Phoenix, Arizona where the real estate market was booming. If you weren’t buying a new home, you were remodeling yours so it seemed as though something in the real estate/landscape/design space would be a fruitful endeavor. Long story short, Zedan Concepts was born in to a Landscape Design firm. I think we’re most proud of really creating something from the ground up. Zedan Concepts was just an idea that’s grown into a successful family business.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
We finished a backyard remodel and the clients sent over a photo of them enjoying an evening in their newly remodeled space saying how much they loved it and how thankful they were for us and the work. That gratification of someone enjoying something that we created was so rewarding and reminded us why we started this business in the first place!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
This is something that’s a definite growth opportunity for us. We chose to answer this question not because we have the answer but because we really need to focus more on the social media spaces. We’ve seen success in being consistent with posting and engagement, however like many small businesses sometimes marketing and social media take a back seat to the day to day work. When we have been extremely successful with new contacts and marketing is when we’ve been consistently positing and sharing our work. Our biggest advice is one word: consistency. Consistency in your work, in marketing, planning and development.
