We were lucky to catch up with Ramxes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ramxes, appreciate you joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Being misunderstood, and mischaracterized in an industry like music can be extremely detrimental especially when people are naturally looking to put others in a box. Therefore this mischaracterization can affect a lot. I was and have been mischaracterized and even called “urban”. A label I don’t feel is extremely fitting. In the past, when playlists and other payment methods that used genres mattered heavily to indie artists, these things mattered, but now with the new age of music marketing, and how music gets out these labels or mislabels are not as important. It is a good thing to be able to show people who you are directly.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Ramxes a musician, content creator, and head of Interstellar. We do a few things I create music which I’ve made under Italians Do It Better, and now create indidpendantly. We also have a few YouTube channels such as Intergalactic Outlaw, Interstellar Bobo, Space Ghost Bobo, and a new channel Interstellar All-Out. All of these four have different audiences and serve multiple crowds. Interstellar Bobo was created because I wanted to see more music in a similar vane to what I create so we came up with Interstellar Bobo, and I also wanted to build up something without relying on the label I was with so I invested in the creation of Interstellar outside of myself.
One of the things I am proud of is seeing the ideas work. Seeing people gravitate to Interstellar Bobo and listening to Portishead, Tricky, and music inspired me. Also creating a space for my music while being able to share other music I like such as 2Mello. I am also proud of what we have done on Intergalactic Outlaw, and being able to have a space outside of music to express interest in other things. I hope and have even seen some of the messages resonate with people. That to me is very rewarding to see people watch a video I made, and get something relatable from them is always a rewarding feeling.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
We built a lot of our audience through trial and error. We had a format of having three videos play on top of each other probably about a year or a year and a half before it was popular, and a lot of people gravitated to it. I would say try everything and experiment. Most importantly stay consistent.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A story that illustrates that was my journey to getting signed, and what happened after. I went to college, had a single mother who had me at a young age, and kept making music despite what others around me said. I met a lot of adversity. a lot of people tell me they have not had or seen as many things as I have in my 20s. Despite financially hard times, hard times with friends, hard times with people passing away, and things like that I was able to keep making music and eventually get a record deal with Italians Do It Better. I went in with the mindset of an indie artist and not having any expectations really other than being on a label that does a label job, while I would still push and do the on-the-ground work I had been doing. Despite this not living up to my expectations at all I had to decide if I wanted to be around those that work with me or those that seem to be inspired by my ideas. Despite what could have been the end of what I do, and could even pose problems by me talking about it here I still continued to march on, and we still kept growing. I still released two projects after that Tetsuo, and End of the world. I still have a lot of prospects to work with, and I still am helping myself get the opportunities I need.
