We were lucky to catch up with Ramses Soto recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ramses, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Although it was just a spark at the time, the idea began when I visited my first music festival. Inspired by the bright lights, crowd, and musical performances, I began creating custom pieces that were bold and eye catching, meant to be seen on the main stage. As more people took an interest in my work, I pushed even harder in honing my craft and finding my voice as a designer. My vision for nightlife fashion propelled me to look beyond our own world, as I marveled over the latest images produced by NASA’s telescopes and rovers. Taking in the beauty of the images, I took a closer look into these distant planets and let my creative mind run wild with the possibilities of what else could be out there. Today, I’m inspired by the textures and colors of the planets above to create unique fashion pieces for stage performances, musicians or special events. Curating a fashion brand that is truly OFFWORLD.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up in the Dominican Republic, I was always the creative black sheep of the family, cutting up the living room curtains to make a superhero mask and a matching cape. When my family and I moved to the United States, I fell in love with cosplaying, a form of costume design where I taught myself to create larger than life costumes and props replicas from my favorite anime tv shows and Marvel movies. Looking back I can definitely see how this molded me into such a bold designer, and why I have a desire to see my work on the stage or big screen. As I honed my skills, I’ve had some amazing opportunities like doing an internship at a prestigious fashion atelier, competed in a world known reality tv series were I was known as the “costume designer/cosplayer”, was able to design custom pieces for reality tv stars and have even worked closely with musicians as I’ve designed and styled looks for their stage performances. These experiences taught me a lot about my craft and how to work with clients who seek custom designs. With Offworld Fashion, I like to be able to create larger than life and bold looks that would make anyone shine and feel their best. I believe that I provide a unique service that will make anyone feel like the main character whether you’re on stage, the big screen, red carpet, or just getting ready for an epic night out.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As a self taught designer, pivoting has become one of my strong suits. Wether it’s a model not having accurate measurements before the fitting, causing you to have to add/subtract several inches to an already made garment, or fabric shipments not arriving on time, I’ve learned that you really just have to expect the unexpected to happen at least once during each project, keeping yourself ready to make the best of any situation.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
To grow clientele, I found it is essential to have a well put together portfolio. This way you’ll be confident the client will see your best work and what you could provide for them. I’ve also found that it is important to foster a professional and open communication relationship with all clients. This is a great way to create a sense of brand loyalty, which in turn could create a repeat customer.
