We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ramon Mejia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ramon, thanks for joining us today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
My industry doesn’t like the idea of working for free. I believe in doing jobs even though it’s paying in exposure or they just dont have money at all. The reason I believe that is because some of my biggest jobs came from working for free.
Ramon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was a musician who took photos and went to texas state to enroll in their photography classes. Their pre-req classes had nothing to do with photography and so I switched to mass comm where I immediately started working for the university star filming short stories about local events happening in san marcos and on campus. Then I went to work filming weddings where I learned a lot about editing, shooting, and capturing sound. I also learned how to talk to people in high-stress environments.
When creating videos for people we need to find the reason why the video needs to be created and find ways of distribution.
What sets me apart is that I have an all-inclusive hourly price that can fit any budget.
I want my potential clients to know that I am a solo creator. What that means is that I have my hands on the project from start to finish. No one edits my photos or videos. I do it all.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is being my own boss. All the success belongs to my clients and the people who have helped me along the way and all of my failures are my own.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I was working for a local musician creating an album release documentary video. I needed more broll for the video but I felt that charging him for the extra work was wrong. So I showed up at one of his performances to get some added footage and met another person there who asked about my camera. We got to talking and he later hired me for some of the most profitable jobs of my career. It pays to do stuff for free sometimes.
