Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ramon Lyons. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ramon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The biggest risk I’ve taken (so far) would definitely be starting my own company straight out of college. To bet on myself and hold on to the belief that I will eventually make something out of this was, at the time, something that a lot of people my age weren’t doing. Over the last three years, I have couch surfed, lived in friends basements, and even moved back in with my parents because I believed in my dream. My company’s cornerstone business venture is filmmaking so I completely did a 180 upon graduation and immersed myself into a world in which I knew absolutely nothing about. During quarantine I spent countless hours on Youtube as well as watching dozens of movies to get more knowledgable on the craft of filmmaking. Over that same time I learned more about the business and legal side of entertainment. The task of founding a company in the capacity I vision it to be takes a lot of research and development in the beginning stages since they’re a lot of moving parts. So dealing with that as well as trying to make a living for myself and dealing with the unknown of Covid and my near future was definitely overwhelming at times. Nevertheless, as I sit here in Los Angeles preparing to begin my Masters in Film Production at the University of Southern California I am grateful of the journey that I chose and the decisions that came thereafter that led me to where I’m at now.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Ramon Lyons and I’m a creative entrepreneur from Orlando, Fl but currently based in Los Angeles. My main area of expertise is filmmaking but I also produce music and clothing. I am most excited about my upcoming documentary film to finally be finished after three years. It explores the evolving condition of the Black student-athlete and the multifaceted identity that these young people have to take on. My brand, Bread and Circuz. is a multidisciplinary production house that operates in a multitude of mediums. In the near future, we have a feature film, album, and first clothing collection as part of our first phase.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think one of the hardest things that non creatives (or anyone for that matter) will have in understanding my journey is the unpredictability of it. People naturally seek out stability. And as others run from from uncertainty, I run to it. I move with intent and plan intuitively. I let God be my vehicle and take care of what’s directly in front of me. I don’t know what my next year, month, or even week looks like. But, I do know that I have a calling on my life that is leading me in the right direction and I that is all the assurance I need to continue on my path.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, I love the process of making something. From the ideation stage to actually formulating that idea into something tangible; that’s where my satisfaction resides. I know by the time it reaches the audience I’m already completely satisfied with the product so I don’t really put much stock into what other people have to say about it.
