We were lucky to catch up with Ramilia Up recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ramilia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
From early childhood I knew exactly what I wanted to do in my life. Music! Even if I was a pianist at the time I knew I’ll use my voice, sing and become a great singer. A singer who accompanies herself on the instrument, touring with shows like Lady Gaga or Jessie J, performing on the biggest stadiums and sharing her story, inspiring people to believe in their dream and follow their heart. I have always imagined myself on the big stage with an instrument and that was my vision of my future from early years. To be honest it did happen pretty fast. At the age of 14 I performed my first solo at the Big Concert Hall in my home city Kazan. The United States was exactly where I wanted to grow even more professionally in the music industry and try out something new for myself. New country, new city, new language, new story. As a child I wasn’t afraid to dream big and break the rules to accomplish something I truly want. Even if my music teacher didn’t want me to pursue a music career, my belief was strong enough to fight and keep the dream alive.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Absolutely! So many things and aspects. For example, when people ask me what I do for a living, as an answer a lot of times I hear “ oh you’re so lucky” or “lucky you”. And it surprises me. ‘Lucky’? What do you mean? It is really that polished that being an artist, being on stage, performing means ‘lucky” for someone. Which is honestly not true. You could be lucky by choosing not to give up? Then maybe yes.
Majority can’t even imagine how hard you worked, how many nights you cried and swore to be done with your career or change your path and finally find a “normal” job and maybe live a normal life. They truly do not understand all the struggles creatives are facing. From being your own agent, producer, manager, pr, coach, learning marketing etc… Of course if your family has some background in the industry then yes, it’s much easier. Otherwise, no.
As well when I say I am a musician I hear “how lucky you are ”, when I say I am a singer I receive “how many followers you have?”. Actually sometimes it hurts cause nowadays some people would rate you, your work by just seeing your following on socials. It does not mean if “not a lot”, by modern standards, then maybe you’re not that good. On my journey I met so many great great musicians touring the world and having 100+ followers on social media so it’s not about that. Yes! Social media is a huge tool nowadays and for someone is a game-changer, but giving a rate that way to creatives, don’t think it’s fair!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Of course! I think the feeling of being in love and alive and willingness to be that light, that change for people and their journey. Actually my next song is exactly about that. Creating music that could touch people’s hearts, make them feel understood, or boost their inner power like a light breath of “hey I hear you, `i feel you and I am with you!”. What if such music could be a healing magic to our souls so we feel we can do something that before we thought we couldn’t?! Like a gentle push towards the new you! I believe music can do that all! And I’m on my journey to share its power!
Music has changed my life and keeps changing it for the best! I’ve met so many wonderful people because of music, I’ve been involved in different opportunities because of music. Music impacts productivity and my perception of the world. As well as it helps me to control the mood. Music can be used to relieve stress and anxiety, can boost immune system function, and there are a range of studies that link music to happiness and pleasure in different ways. By the way, there are some articles I wrote about the effect of music on our well being, some of them already published in international scientific journals. Music might be a cure for us! If only we use it the right way.
