Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ramessu Ali Bey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ramessu Ali, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Growing up on the west side of Chicago, I was no stranger to the struggles of the streets. Being a hustler was ingrained in me at young age and I learned early on how to move around in an environment that was filled with danger and opportunity. But as I hustled to make my mark, I watched friends become victim’s of drugs, many ending up in prison or worse.
It was tuff back then, it was the beginning of the crack error and it was fuck’d up!!! I fell deeper into dealing drugs and the excitement of street life promised quick money and an exciting lifestyle that had real life consequences. Carrying guns had become apart of my everyday routine.
My first arrest was a wake-up call, but I quickly returned to the same destructive patterns, chasing money and living like tomorrow wasn’t promised.
The second time I landed in prison, I had time to reflect. Surrounded by them concrete walls, I realized I was trapped in a cycle that would lead me nowhere. I began to write about my dreams and aspirations, understanding that if I didn’t change, I would keep repeating the same shit.
When I was released, I made a promise to myself: I would do shit different. I stayed to myself and I focused on figuring out what I was gone do with myself. That last prison bit became the catalyst for transformation.
Today, I embrace my journey as a testament to change, proving that it’s never too late to rewrite your story and break free from the past.
Wanting to do something bigger, I realized I had a choice: I could use my energy to do something creative, something that could inspire others.
I always had a passion for music and clothes two worlds that allowed me to express my truth, but I couldn’t sing or rap. So I created a brand I wanted to reflect the streets the grit, the struggle, and the triumphs.
With a small amount of cash I’d saved from my hustles, I took the risk. I dove deep into the culture of fashion head first, learning everything I could about design, branding, and marketing.
It was ruff, nobody in the game wanted to share information. I guess that’s a Chicago thing!!! I faced rejection, suffered doubt, and the constant fear of failure. But I remembered where I came from and the lessons learned on in the streets. I knew I wasn’t just building a brand; I was building a empire.
Today, my brand stands as a testament to the power of transformation. It’s more than just clothing; it’s a lifestyle that inspires others to rise above their circumstances. I took a risk that not only changed my life but gave a voice to those who walked similar paths.
In the end, it’s about showing the world that no matter where you come from, you can turn your struggles into something powerful. The streets may have shaped me, but they didn’t define me. I took that risk, and it led me to greatness.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Born and raised on the streets of Chicago, I grew up influenced by pimps and drug dealers. I was raised by both my parents. I wasn’t one of those whose father wasn’t around, they instilled in me morals and values and my father particularly the importance of hard work and perseverance, but like many, I faced the temptations of the streets. It was during my formative years that I discovered my passion for fashion — a way to channel my creativity and stay away from the negative influences that surrounded me.
Determined to travel a different path, I dove headfirst into fashion, starting my own streetwear brand as a means of self-expression. My discipline comes from my passion to create something inspiring, focusing on delivering a higher standard in products and services that resonate with my people. I focus on creating comfortable and stylish sweatsuits, jerseys, T-shirts, hoodies, jackets, and denim that embody the spirit of resilience and authenticity.
What sets my brand apart is not just the products I offer, but the story behind them. Each piece is a reflection of my journey, a blend of creativity, culture, and the determination to rise above stereotypes. I focus on solving real problems for my clients, providing them with versatile and stylish clothing that fits into their everyday lives, whether they’re out clubbin’ or just chillin’ at home.
I pride myself on my commitment to quality and detail, ensuring that every item is designed with purpose and intention. But more than that, I am most proud of not quitting. The road hasn’t always been easy, but my dedication to this shit and my determination has kept me going. I know ithe power of resilience, and I want my brand to inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
To potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my brand is more than just clothing; it’s a movement rooted in authenticity and perseverance. When you wear my designs, you’re not just wearing a brand — you’re wearing a story of determination, creativity, and hope. Join me on this journey as we redefine streetwear and uplift each other along the way!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I first dropped my brand, I held onto the thought that my family and friends would naturally be my biggest supporters. I imagined them fuckin’ wit me, wearing my designs, and helping gettin’ my shit out there. However, as I started on this journey, I quickly realized that the reality was quite different.
The initial excitement of starting my streetwear brand was met with doubt from some of the people I thought would really support. I encountered those doubts and questions about whether I could truly succeed in such a competitive industry. I sold drugs on a block where there were 5 different dealers on one block and that’s where I learned marketing. I’m use to competing!!! But It was a tough pill to swallow — the very people I expected to get behind me was not as supportive as I had imagined.
This experience forced me to unlearn a critical lesson: support doesn’t always come from those closest to you. I had to shift my focus and seek encouragement from new sources — fellow entrepreneurs, mentors, and a community of like-minded individuals who overstood my struggles and my triumphs of building a streetwear brand from the ground up.
Through the process though, I discovered the power of resilience and self-motivation. I learned to rely on my vision and passion for my work rather than seeking validation from others. It taught me that sometimes, the loudest cheers come from unexpected places, and true support often grows from shared experiences and struggles.
As I continued to push my brand, I found strength in connecting with my audience and building a community that resonated with my story. This shit of unlearning and relearning has shaped not only my brand but also my understanding of the importance of surrounding myself with people who genuinely believe in my mission.
So for me this realization became a driving force behind the brand to create a space where everyone feels seen and supported, regardless of their background. It’s a reminder that while not everyone will understand or support your vision, there are plenty other muthafuckaz out there who will, and that’s where the real shit happens.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A pivotal moment in my entrepreneurial journey came when the global pandemic hit, just as my shit was gaining momentum. That shit hit!!! Retail store closures and events canceled fuck’d up everything. Everybody was scared and it was dry in sales, leaving me at a standstill.
Instead of folding to panic, I decided to pivot. I focused on enhancing my online presence and creating a e-commerce experience. I engaged with my people on social media and shifted my product line to prioritize comfort, introducing more chill shit for those working from home. The streets got back out there though and a demand for streetwear brand owners was heating up. I did good but I was forced to do shit other ways on different levels .
This experience taught me the value of adaptability and resilience. By embracing change and listening to my customers, I not only survived the challenges of the pandemic but also strengthened my brand’s identity and connection with my community. Ultimately, it was a defining moment that reinforced my determination to build a brand that thrives in adversity and fosters a sense of community.
