We were lucky to catch up with Ramandeep Kaur recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ramandeep, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In my opinion, being successful is a relative term. One should have their own goals that one wants to achieve to feel successful and keep moving the bar up as much as possible to keep growing. One should have a clear vision and purpose about why they want to pursue something. Starting my own business in the beauty industry has always been my dream and it gives me immense satisfaction and pleasure to work with our clients to meet their expectations. The purpose of my business is to serve our customers the best and that helps me to do my best possible as a brow artist.
Hard work and perseverance have been another key factor in my success. I am a registered nurse professionally and I have a huge respect for the people working in the healthcare. However, I was always intrigued by the beauty industry, and working as a beauty artist gave me joy. So I decided to quit my healthcare job and started working as a beauty artist. It took a lot of hard work to gain new skills and learn new techniques but I never gave up. All the hard work finally paid off and now I am a proud business owner of two locations- first in K-town called Western Beauty and second in North Hollywood called Rems Threading and Beauty, named after my daughter’s name.

Ramandeep, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Working in the beauty industry has always been my dream. I had to work at different small businesses to gain the skills and experience. I also had to face a lot of difficulties in this path. You rarely find people who genuinely want to lift you. I had to deal with some workplace discrimination because I was a favorite brow-shaping artist of some clients and they refused to work with other artists. However, I am lucky to face these challenges as they helped me grow as a person and a working professional. I also was lucky enough to get opportunities to work with celebrity clients like Gal Gadot and Davina from the Selling Sunset.
We provide various services at both of our locations including threading, waxing, facials, and eyelash services. I love helping clients to fix their problematic over-tweezed, irregular, or not evenly shaped brows. I like to take 15-30 minutes on one eyebrow and start with consulting the client first to learn what they want and make suggestions based on my expertise. Serving our client’s needs is very important to us and we do our best to ensure that clients leave with a happy face after their appointment at our beauty salon.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I had to use all my life savings to start my first business and there was always some doubt about what if it did not work out. Taking risks is of course nerve-wracking and it takes a lot of consideration to take one. I can say now that I don’t regret taking the risk of starting my own business as it brought me where I am today and making me a strong independent woman. I also had tremendous help from family, especially my husband, Sandeep Singh, both financially and emotionally in difficult times.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I believe my work quality and efficiency have gained the trust of many clients and not only do they exclusively book appointments with me but they also recommend their friends and family to use our services. Dedicating focus to client needs, and keeping up to date with new beauty trends has been working out so far to grow our clientele. I only work on an appointment basis now because of the increasing demand for our services.
