We were lucky to catch up with Ram Reyes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ram thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The biggest risk I did was pretty much quitting my job and just doing freelance without really a plan. To be fair, I was still living with my parents and had a safety net. This was in 2021. I was still looking for a job but at the same time I started my 365 Project, posting a design everyday on Instagram. I actually got rejected from a job while I was doing the project. I just hoped the project woudl’ve just kept my skills sharp and would be a good portfolio to show. But then I started getting freelance projects and more opportunities that I didn’t really want a “real job” anymore.
Now I’m leaning more towards content creation but I think still this is the biggest risk I’ve taken and honestly can’t have it any other way.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started designing when I was at the Fresno City Rampage newspaper. I was first a photographer but I really didn’t like how the newspaper looked so I took it upon myself to make it look better. My first project was to design the magazine we put out every semester. I designed the entire thing without any prior knowledge of InDesign. Then the next semester, I became the layout editor.
I usually make most of my money selling prints. I tend to just express myself through my art. And the thing with self-expression is, the more specific it is, the more it somehow resonates with people. I want people to be able to show a piece of themselves through my art.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
It’s all about consistency. People can’t find you if you’re not consistently showing up and you gotta show up as yourself. So also Authenticity. People are drawn to people being fully themselves. That tends to help them be their best self as well.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I like to read a lot of philosophy and political theory. If anything, I want to share what I learned through that and studying different religions to help people. A recurring theme in my posters is spirituality. Not advocating for anything specific but I do think there’s a higher power of some sort. I don’t know what it is but it’s there. Alan Watts is a very good starting point on this. Highly recommend listening to his lectures.
