We recently connected with Rakhi Jha and have shared our conversation below.
Rakhi , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Around 4 years back, after practicing architecture for 20 years, I wanted to explore the arts as a small break. I have always been inclined to create and would often do so during my off time. I initially wanted to create unique artistic furniture. I wanted to be surrounded by art and not just on the walls. In the process I discovered ‘Fluid Art’ which was a perfect medium to do not only on canvas but also on table tops. I was hooked from day one. My small studio became my sanctuary where I would immerse myself for hours at end. Slowly I started posting my works on social media platforms, like, Instagram and Facebook. My accent table made of Epoxy Resin and Preserved flowers became an instant hit. The video was shared and liked by many. Followers started messaging wanting to buy it. This is when I knew that my hobby could potentially become my full time profession. The idea of pursuing this creative path excited me and I knew I had found my new passion. I was willing to leave my architecture job and pursue this. As time progressed and my unique style evolved with my social media growing at an incredible speed, I knew this was my newfound career.
Rakhi , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Once I had decided to switch careers from Architecture to the Arts, I knew I had to work very hard to establish myself and create my own unique style. Since I’m self taught, I challenged myself and started to learn various mediums through the techniques of Fluid Art. I started with acrylic paints and since I was passionate about doing painted table tops, I felt I needed to explore better materials that would be more durable than paints. This is when I discovered epoxy resin as an art medium. The challenge now was how to do perfect fluid art blowouts with resin instead of using acrylic paints. This was extremely hard and I understood why many did not pursue it. But as I practiced more, I was finally able to manipulate this medium and get results that were similar or even better than an acrylic paint blowout. I finally had my own unique style of art and that is how my social media platforms started to grow. Now I have added other mediums to my body of work, like alcohol ink art and texture art. I often combine mediums to produce my work and this is slowly becoming my signature style. I not only do wall art, I do furniture and home decor pieces too. I’ve also ventured into doing preserved flower and resin jewelry. Now due to a lot of requests, I’m slowly getting into holding workshops to teach fluid art to others. I was already sharing my processes on my social media platforms and now I will be doing so in-person.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes there is! Most times ‘Fluid Art’ or ‘Acrylic Pouring’ or ‘Resin Art’ or even ‘Abstract Art’ is not taken seriously and in the same context as ‘Fine Art’. Just because this art does not use the traditional ways of using a paintbrush to create, it is often treated as craft rather than art. I would love to try to change that perception. With my work evolving every day and with the effort that I put into each piece, I feel I’m making progress towards changing this. I may still use the same fluid art techniques but with each piece having more detail and depth, I’m getting closer to that goal. It is not easy to create nature inspired landscapes and scenic art through the fluid art mediums but with a lot of skill, it can be done and I’m trying to show how to do this to my audience and hopefully inspiring them to take that challenge.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
There is only one rule you have to follow to grow on social media. Each day the work that you post should be better than yesterday’s. By that I mean, if you are creating and sharing your work with your audience, every day you need to make sure you have progressed in your creations. Don’t look for perfection, look for progress and if you feel your work has progressed, it will do well and your audience will recognize that. Your growth will resonate with your followers and they will appreciate your effort and your work and you will grow.
