We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Raissa Palacios a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Raissa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
All my projects are meaningful to me but there was this project I really felt honored to do, I had to capture the emotions of a wedding invitation and transform it into a hand embroidered design. I felt so honored to do this because what a big day is a wedding day, all the time, love and effort people put into all the details to have a magical day so capturing those feelings and memories in my art in order to give the person an everlasting memory of this special day is something truly satisfying for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Sure, well I’m Raissa Palacios and I’m an embroidery artist. As a creative person, art is that door that allows me to transform my ideas into something tangible and beautiful. I discovered embroidery while living in Iceland a few years ago, life happens so I never went further on it. It wasn’t until the global pandemic that I resumed embroidery as a way to beat my anxiety and feel relaxed. Embroidery became almost a therapeutic craft. As a mother of two I may say embroidery has been a form of self-care, it has given me a purpose. Therefore, my main goal was and still is to share the joy of embroidery while also helping people find peace through this art and of course the satisfaction of creating beautiful things with your own hands. That is how Blóm Creative Studio was born. Blóm means flower in Icelandic so my creative space name’s a reminder that no matter how hard the winter is, summer will come and with it the flowers that will keep blooming and bring us joy.
Blóm Creative Studio offers three lines of products: the fiber jewelry line, custom embroidery (hoops, clothes) and embroidery supplies, here you’ll find kits and stick and stitch packs.
Another thing I’m thankful for about this creative path is that it has helped me to connect with a group of people experiencing the same feelings and therefore it has allowed me to build a community.
For me it is very important that people know that at Blóm Creative Studio, every piece is carefully created with time, patience and love. I seek to share those feelings in each of my creations.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is the satisfaction of sharing your work with people and inspiring them, thanks to social media this can be done all over the world. To inspire someone with your work and planting the seeds of willing to try something new is what makes an artist or creative soul, at the end of the day, to feel happy and fulfilled with their work.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Nowadays, technology and fast crafts at cheaper prices is making the creative and artistic community have a hard time thriving. People sometimes prefer cheaper price and quantity than quality. So What can society do to best support artists? Well, I would recommend to first start local, visit craft markets with local artisans, get involved in how and why they make their art, buy art or commission some. People have to keep in mind that when you buy from a small business you are most of the time supporting a family behind that business. Social media is also a way to support artists and creatives. To name one social media platform specifically, instagram, is a very powerful tool. sharing art images or artist pages through Instagram can be very valuable to artists in their exposure. In addition, when you leave a positive and genuine comment on an artist and the art or product being created, it would be uplifting and can make a big difference in their practice.
