We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Raimek Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Raimek, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission is to create timeless pieces that can be appreciated by ALL walks of life & inspire individuals to fearlessly be themselves!
I want to show my community that you don’t have to conform in anyway, shape, or form in order to be successful.
I made vows to stick MY vision no matter what opportunity present itself.
This is so meaningful to me because I’ve seen so many of my people get lost trying to be something they’re not when it’s way cooler to just be yourself.
Through the good, bad, & ugly side of the business I find peace in knowing I did it my way & I will only get better with time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I was growing up my mother used to pick my outfit out daily & dress me up for school. She would always tell me how “fly” I was leaving out for school!
She had no idea how much confidence she was instilling in me each and every time I got dressed.
It didn’t take long for me to start wanting to do my own thing, I wanted that creative control so I asked my mom if I could start picking out my own outfits.
Not much longer after that I began feeling like literally everything was just a tad bit cooler when I added my own touch to it.
I started out bleaching/distressing my own denim, then I started painting on all of my old sneakers.
Nothing felt better at the time than getting complemented on things you added your own personal touch to.
I then started hand sewing items for fun, never thought much of it until one day I wore a piece I made with an old Kobe jersey I had and was asked where I got my jacket from… I answered “I made it myself” with the biggest smile on my face and my friend laughed at me as if I said some type of joke.
He didn’t believe I really made the jacket myself because this wasn’t something that people knew me for, but from that day on I knew I had a gift.
I knew that I wanted to have my own brand someday but at the time basketball was at the top of the priority list. Once I realized I wasn’t going to the NBA I began asking myself what’s next for me.
The hardest part for me starting out was finding a name that made sense and I could build with.
I was in Philly at graffiti pier supporting a friend on a creative endeavor, when I overheard him say “this place is like a little lawless society” and instantly a bulb went on in my head!
I took the name and ran with it! I started promoting the concept of the brand for years before releasing my first collection in 2021.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by being myself, not trying to look “too cool” and taking advantage of all the creative’s around me.
I have a very unorthodox way of marketing but it works for me and I think my community appreciates that.
I also have no shame in linking up with other creatives who I think are dope and collaborating on a photo shoot, video shoot, 3d design, etc. it’s always beneficial for all parties involved so if you want to grow don’t be afraid of getting out of your comfort zone and linking up with other like minded creatives.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Marketing!
I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a marketing strategy, you could literally have the best product in the world but if the marketing isn’t there you will never reach your full potential.
