We were lucky to catch up with Rai Hudson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rai, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a music career when I was very young. I have a vivid memory of standing on my mom’s living room table and performing for her guests. It became a regular event, and each time they visited, I would have different songs, outfits, and props ready. Later, at age 8, my grandfather helped me record my first song, which was a defining moment in my growth.
Growing up in a musical family—my mom was a professional opera singer, my grandmother a professional dancer, and my grandfather a renowned entertainer—provided me with constant inspiration. They taught me everything they knew, nurturing my passion for music from a young age.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Rai Hudson, and I am a singer, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur. My journey into the music industry began at a young age, largely influenced by my grandfather, John Pierre Gee. He played a crucial role in shaping my understanding of how to present and promote myself as an artist. However, this path was not without its challenges.
As a feminine, queer Black musician in Milwaukee, I faced significant obstacles. Many venues refused to book me, and I encountered hostility at some shows. Despite these setbacks, I remained determined. I knew I had a talent that deserved to be heard, and I was inspired by a calling greater than myself.
This drive led me to audition for American Idol, where I had the incredible opportunity to meet Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie in Nashville, Tennessee. That experience was transformative; it opened my eyes to both the glamorous and challenging aspects of the entertainment industry. Even on a national platform, I often felt misunderstood, but I channeled those complex emotions into my songwriting. In 2018, I released my debut single, “Sally,” which marked a significant milestone in my career.
Following the release of “VIBE, released in 2022” I noticed an increase in visibility for queer musicians in Milwaukee. Inspired by this momentum, I knew I had to do more to support artists like myself. This led to the creation of R17 Records, a record label dedicated to providing LGBTQ+ musicians with a platform to share their music without barriers or gatekeeping.
At R17 Records, we offer a range of services, including recording studio bookings, artist management, and marketing support. I am proud to have partnered with Mid Coast Music, which is affiliated with Warner Brothers, to help our artists gain access to one of the world’s largest music libraries. Through this initiative, I aim to uplift and empower queer musicians, ensuring their voices are heard and celebrated in the music industry.
As I continue my journey, I remain committed to fostering a supportive community for artists who face similar challenges, and I look forward to making an even greater impact in the industry.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my journey as an artist is witnessing how my work resonates with others. There’s nothing quite like receiving feedback from listeners who tell me that my songs have opened their eyes to the tumultuous situations they face in their lives. Knowing that my music can provide healing and perspective is profoundly fulfilling.
Additionally, I take great pride in creating safe spaces for fellow creatives to shine. It’s incredibly rewarding to facilitate environments where artists can showcase their work to audiences who appreciate and understand it. This sense of community is essential for fostering creativity and self-expression.
Moreover, being recognized as a source of representation is deeply meaningful to me, especially for those who haven’t seen someone who looks, speaks, or dresses like them portrayed positively in the media. I strive to be my authentic self unapologetically, understanding that my presence and visibility can inspire others.
Ultimately, I am aware that what I’m doing extends far beyond my individual journey. It is about contributing to a larger movement that uplifts and empowers marginalized voices. This realization motivates me to continue my work with passion and purpose, knowing that it can have a lasting impact on individuals and communities alike.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I began building my social media presence through drag shows, primarily because many venues in Milwaukee were hesitant to book me as a solo act due to my feminine androgyny. The drag community welcomed me with open arms, providing a supportive environment where I could express myself freely. I started by posting behind-the-scenes content, including “Get Ready with Me” videos and Q&A sessions featuring the performers I collaborated with. This not only showcased my personality but also highlighted the vibrant community around me.
I performed in drag shows across Milwaukee and Madison, gradually increasing my visibility and connecting with a wider audience. Eventually, I created my own show at the iconic “This Is It” bar, the oldest gay bar in Milwaukee. I named the show “Caba-Rai,” which featured local queer musicians, comedians, burlesque performers, and more. This platform allowed me to elevate diverse voices while further establishing my presence in the community.
For anyone just starting to build their social media presence, my primary advice is to be your authentic self. Authenticity resonates with audiences and helps you attract like-minded individuals. Seek out communities that align with your interests and values, and don’t hesitate to collaborate with them. Building genuine connections will not only enhance your content but also create a supportive network that fosters growth and creativity. Embrace your unique journey, and remember that your individuality is your greatest asset in the digital landscape.
