We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rahman McWilliams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rahman , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The concept of Cut Lab comes from the medical field I wanted to bring a twist to the barber shop world. The colors of Cut Lab is not the typical colors. We have counter tops instead of barber stations we carry briefcase instead of barber bags.. we wear Lab jackets instead of barber smocks and we give out complimentary water to our customers daily
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Cut Lab is located on the inside of Oak Court Mall est 2018. I got an opportunity of a life time. The shop became available I put in my application and explain to the General manager my ideas about the barbershop and they loved the idea.. it was alot of application turned in to get the barbershop inside the mall. I was fortunate enough that they chose me. I actually built my own barber I didn’t have to hire a contractor. I go to alot of school to talk to the kids about business and barber business thing u can’t learn in school..
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My personality I’m a people person. I really don’t meet strangers.. im from a small town in Mississippi called Cleveland.. I treat people they way I want to be treated I don’t take days off on how I show my appreciation to my clients.. I love what I do.. I love giving back to the community. I started a non-profit name after my Mother M.A.G. (making achievable goals)
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to learn in business is to never get comfortable always stay ready. Marketing skills and people skills has to be on the same level.. never take days off on how u treat people there intuition will pick up on it asap.. so always give your clients the best comtomer service possible. Planting good seeds in the community will always grow more clients
