We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rahim Gray a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rahim, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I use to be a chef, I worked in some of the best restaurants and catering companies in Boston. Its cool how the skills overlap, like Mise en place a French culinary phrase which means “putting in place” or “gather”. It refers to the setup required before cooking, and is often refer to organizing. Such a big help for me and my ADHD. Getting everything i need before i start making art allows my creativity to flow uninterrupted. When i teach classes it helps me to make it look easy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Im born and raised in Dorchester Boston ma. Iam a aries. Im self-taught in fluid acrylics. I used to be a chef, i worked in restaurants and catering, corona gave me freedom to work for myself making and teaching art. I teach paint night classes at different breweries and private classes in your home. When i started my journey down the rabbit hole of pour art/fluid acrylics i never imagined that it would be full-time. My sister is a therapist and told me i needed a hobby, so i went to youtube university for pour art. I like that I must relinquish control when making a piece because of the power of gravity and the formlessness of liquid. Fluid art challenges me – it has no fixed shape, and when shear force is applied, it cannot resist. My art is influenced by both music and current events.. I make and sell canvases and luxury handmade ceramic coasters finished with resin. In my classes i teach you how to make your own masterpiece without using a paint brush, with infinite techniques there is no wrong way to pour paint.
When i came up with a solution to make pour art and take home, i knew i was on to something big. A pizza box was all it would take. I love that i can go anywhere and teach controlled chaos. Abstract art.
My class is not your average paint night.
Trust the process.
As Bruce Lee said “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water. If you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; be water, my friend.”
Art, in its many forms, is therapy for the soul. Peace
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The look on others faces when they create a work of art following my instructions.
The best compliment i can receive is “how did you do that”
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Just be yourself. Anything that you like there are millions of people that like it too so do what you do for you and share. It will take time, so start now and put in your 10,000 hours and everything else will fall in place.
