Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rafael Basurto. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rafael, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents have always taken such a low-key approach that it never felt like I was being pushed. They had this unique way of teaching me everything I’ve learned in life and in my career without ever being forceful or demanding. The most memorable example is in our family’s photography and video business for events. I’ve been around it my entire life because my parents brought me along to every quinceañera and wedding on their calendar, and I learned a lot just by watching. Instead of saying, “You need to do this,” they let me observe and absorb everything naturally. Eventually, they encouraged me to give photography and video a try and I was more than eager. Because I had been immersed in that environment for so long, I picked up the skills in such a smooth and natural way. It all just felt right.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the wedding and quinceañera photography world thanks to my parents, who have been in it since I was about 3 or 4 years old. As I got older, I started to really appreciate not just the work they did, but also the kinds of social connections that come with it. Now, my dad and I work together, offering photo and video coverage for weddings and quinceañeras.
One thing that sets me apart is that I try not to stick strictly to that super formal, professional vibe at events. Instead, I like to show up as a mix of a guest and a professional like half-worker, half-friend. I think it’s really important to bring good energy to an event so I don’t just feel like “the guy with the camera.” It helps people feel more comfortable too.
I genuinely love meeting new people, so the social side of what we do is a big deal to me. I’m also really proud of pushing through those early, awkward stages of learning photography. That beginner phase is tough it’s full of doubts and second-guessing, wondering if you’ll ever really get good at it. But I stuck with it.
At the end of the day, what matters most to us is making sure people get exactly what they’re looking for. We know weddings and quinceañeras are huge milestones, and we want everything we deliver to reflect each client’s vision and expectations.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what helped build my reputation within my market is already having a decent-sized social circle. This helped me to offer my services for free for practice and marketing purposes. If my friends liked what they received, then they’d help market my service through word of mouth.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the joy that people show me in various scenarios. I love seeing someone’s reaction to a picture I am showing them on the day of the shoot or seeing a couple’s reaction when they receive all of their wedding photos and wedding video. I love knowing that I was able to be involved in creating memories with and for them on their big day.
