Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Raf Lindia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Raf thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I don’t know if there was a specific moment I can point, I just know I always loved writing. It started with poems when I was a kid. Then, as I developed a passion for movies, I tried my hand at writing screenplays. But I realized that for me to reach an audience with my stories, which ultimately is what I was looking for, I decided to focus on writing a novel. It was the notion that I had all of these thoughts, ideas and stories that I could share with thousands of people, to entertain them or move them, that drove me on this path. I was a Marketing manager in Sicily when my first novel (La Moglie del Sindaco) was published by a small local publisher. People would recognize me on the street and stop me to ask me about the last twist and why I did that, and what was going to happen next! That pushed me to keep going and do better with the next story.
Raf, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an Italian/American author. I began writing as a hobby when I was living and working in Sicily. I wrote a series of three novels, a crime drama series involving my main character, Detective Marchese, which were published by a local publisher who gave me my break. In 2014, I moved to New York to pursue a different path in my life, and in 2018 I took a big chance to focus entirely on my writing. That is when I produced the last book (or maybe not the last!) in the series of Detective Marchese, arguably my favorite novel yet, Shakespeare: Conspiracy of Silence. My next two novels were more in the category of psychological thrillers. This was really a change for me, and it allowed me to grow and explore different aspects of my writing. And I am so thrilled to be working on a project with Blanche Baker, as director, to produce a movie out of my last novel, Girl in a Glass Box.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Growing a presence on social media is incredibly difficult. I have more then 17K followers on Instagram and it was like a second job trying to get to this level. It requires you to constantly create new content, or reshape it to keep up with the ever changing algorithms and rules – it is almost exhausting. But there’s one thing I’m sure about, which is that if a person has talent, something to say, good content, and that person keeps pushing it out, that person will be noticed. Unfortunately, we are competing against the influencers who use controversy or competitions to get noticed. My advice is to stay true to yourself – share interesting content that focuses on your talent or what you have to say. Keep folks updated on your work and what you’re doing, but also don’t be afraid to have an opinion.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Getting to have an interaction with my readers is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do. I love to know their opinion, or to be asked why I made the choices I made, or what inspired my story, or even what is meant by a specific passage. I do a lot of in-person presentations or podcasts or interviews to talk about my books and get as close to my readers as I can. Getting the feedback, whatever it might be, and hopefully finding that people are waiting impatiently for my next book, is the most rewarding part.
