We recently connected with Raeshetta Thompson and have shared our conversation below.
Raeshetta , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
As a young girl I use to play hairdresser with my baby dolls. I eventually went to a career tech high school where they offered cosmetology, I honestly was terrible at hairstyling my first year of school. I went on through 3 years of cosmetology and a lot of messed up hairstyles but I finally graduated with a cosmetology license and that’s how it all started. I then set off for my career of hairstyling. Also suffering from alopecia as a young girl I knew I wanted to help people with hair loss and building confidence. Later in my career I would become an educator and shortly after I took up training to become a professional wig maker. 20 years later here I am! Helping women all over regain their confidence and look great while doing it 💛
Raeshetta , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a licensed hairstylist of 20+ years with a background in speciality cuts and styling to hair replacement and Trichology. I originally got into the hair loss field because I suffered from hair loss and understood that it was a need for compassion and care in the beauty industry. I also knew it was a need to have realistic looking hair pieces because majority of the units on the market looked like hats. That’s where my expertise came in handy. Not only could I create wigs I could also style and cut very good. I combined the two and created a masterpiece! This is how Hair Rich Club was created in 2016. Hair Rich Club is an online wig supplier serving women all over the World 🌎. We help women look and feel their best with the most realistic, easy to wear units on the market .
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is its own beast! And it’s definitely not for the weak,,, Originally I started with my personal Facebook and Ig. I remember when I was told by someone that I needed to be the face of my brand. I was scared and not that confident in being behind the camera. However I knew that I had limited funds and paying an influencer would get expensive. I put my big girl pants on and started going live and creating more videos about my brand and products. I was still somewhat nervous.., “what if they don’t like me?” “What if I don’t look the part?” I had imposter syndrome, this is where you sike yourself out of doing something you know you can do! Anyways I had to do it! I had no choice! So I stopped over thinking it. When I first started going live I used to put on makeup and cute clothes and try to always look my best. There’s nothing wrong with that but it got very draining really fast. So I started to do what worked for me! I was always going to look nice but makeup wasn’t really my thing, but wigs were. I would get dressed put my wig and some gloss on and go live! I talked about things that I was educated on and it made things easy. I started to create more content and then eventually became a content creator who was getting paid. I’m still growing because it’s a lot of work but it’s working! If I could give you any advice I’d say be consistent! I know that sound cliché but it’s true. A steady pace wins the race… I’ve always been ok being the tortoise 🐢
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn humility… my grandfather taught me this early. I use to help him work on houses, well one day we were working and one of the workers decided to use the restroom where the pipes weren’t connected 🙈 long story short it was a mess, literally. My grandfather said, “Raeshetta go ahead put some gloves on and clean it up while we get back to work and finish the job.” I didn’t talk back to my grandfather but that day I had a strong rebuttal. Nonetheless I still cleaned it up! At the end of the day I explained how upset and embarrassed it made me feel and then he explained to me his logic. He said, humility is something most people are not comfortable with but it builds character, Sometimes in life we have to do things we don’t necessarily like but as long as it doesn’t violate who you are and your character you will live through it! I still was a little angry but he took me for food and I forgave him, lol. But now when I look back I understand what it all meant! Sometimes life will fish you certain things and you will have to make a choice. Will you accept the humility or will you react a certain way and shatter your future? Tge choice will always be yours’
