We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Raelene Penman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Raelene, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
Many people believe they have the skills to be a dog trainer, while dog owners often lack the knowledge of what to seek in a professional trainer. Unfortunately, by engaging these self-proclaimed “dog trainers,” owners often unknowingly put their dogs at risk due to the lack of expertise these individuals possess. Over the past year, I know of several dogs that ended up in the hands of the wrong people. I have asked the owners when they contact me why they chose to have these “trainers” work with their dogs. I’ve been told, they were cheaper, they were closer, my friend had them train their dog, and they did good but now I realize they didn’t have the experience to deal with my dogs issues.
I have seen in recent months several dogs euthanized because the owner spent all their money on the “other trainer” and cannot afford to pay my fees because the dog is so dangerous now because the inexperienced self proclaimed trainer made the situation worse. Or they spent their month on the “other trainer” and the dog misbehaves more than before the training. But now they don’t have the money to pay for training with me. It makes me sad, I wish I could help these people…but this is how I make a living. I cannot offer my services for free.
I have a 5 Star Google rating, over 40+ years of training experience, have attended many different seminars and truly believe I need to continue learning every day! I do not think anyone should be volunteering their services, as it is a disservice to the owner and their dog. It sets an unrealistic expectation that all trainers are free or charge very little.
The reality is, dog training takes time and patience, and this costs money no matter who you choose! Working with me, my clients receive affordable price options so that they can get the most out of their training experience.
I offer discounts for clients who have served in the military or as a first responder. We are also open to negotiating payment plans when possible. Ultimately, my goal is to ensure that everyone has a positive experience with their canine companion, whatever that may look like. I will always strive to provide an affordable option to those looking for quality training. Additionally, I offer private lessons as well to make sure that you and your pup get the individual attention you need for success. I have not done my job if your dog isn’t behaving the way you expect or if you have not learned how to keep up the training we have done.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I retired from law enforcement in 2013 and asked myself what I wanted to do for the next 15 or 20 years…dog training was the answer. My first dog training experience was with my great dane CH. HyContry’s Rustlers Rhapsody…fondly known as Rex. Since Rex I have found several different disciplines I learned and succeeded at!
From that humble beginning I have now earned several certifications including, American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and American Red Cross Pet First Aid/CPR Instructor. My emphasis is on teaching dogs to work with their owners so the owner’s goals are met so both the owner and dog are successful. I am an advocate of figuring out what type of training will suit the dog and owner to ensure success.
I have been teaching group classes, private lessons, seminars, workshops and more since 2013. My mission is to support owners in making their dreams come true with their canine partners, focusing on developing trust between handler and dog for a lasting bond!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I am consistent, don’t oversell myself and strive for both the dog and owner to be successful! I have a high degree of passion, and believe I could help ensure clients’ dogs are in good hands, while also providing excellent customer service. Customer satisfaction is important to me and it is something I work hard to make sure happens with every dog and owner.
