We were lucky to catch up with Rachelle Meyer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachelle, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
Jordan is a 4th generation dairy farmer. He grew up on a dairy farm and never left. Farming was in his blood and heart. We met in high school, got married right away, and had 6 kids(soon to be 7 any day now). Farming grew on me from the start and I absolutely loved all that came along with farm life. In 2015 Jordan and I had an opportunity to start renting a farm of our own. We took a leap of faith and dove into Organic row crops and started down our soil health journey. We came across many challenges. The farm was full of weeds, we couldn’t keep up with them so we integrated cover crops, but that farm just showed us it wanted to be grass. So that’s exactly what we did. In the fall of 2018 we went to a soil health summit. After we left Jordan and I were buzzing with ideas that we could incorporate to not only impact our soil but our community. 2 months later we got our first herd of beef cattle. But we didn’t stop there. That following spring we got pigs, meat chickens, turkeys, laying hens. We wanted to start changing the land but also providing nutrient dense food for our family and community. In 2018 we started Wholesome Family Farms. From there we just knew we were meant to do more. We started integrating stocker cattle each year. In 2020 we knew our rented farm needed goats so we bough our first 82 does. Our goat herd now is 100% Spanish goats that we have 3 enterprises from one(we sell them for meat, we lease them out for grazing public and private property, and we sell genetics). We bought our first farm on our own in 2021 and turned the entire farm to grass. We continue to diversify each year and started custom grazing. In 2022 we started our own micro herd of A2/A2 100% grass fed Jersey’s that we sell raw milk from. We quickly grew that from milking 3 cows to 7 cows in just 9 short months. We knew we wanted to build a legacy for our kids. We want farming to be full of opportunity, enjoyment, and fulfilling. We are on a mission to make big changes. Its our goal to regenerate every piece of land we run and provide the most highest quality milk, meat, and eggs we can for our own family and for our community for generations to come.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Jordan grew up farming and that’s all he has ever known. I met him in high school and it was honestly love at first sight. I loved him and everything that came along with farm life. In 2018, my husband and I had a vision to provide the healthiest food we could for our family. We wanted to teach them the beauty of growing and raising their own food and we wanted to share it with people in our community. I was searching for a way to make healthy, balanced meals with confidence and ease.
And now, that’s exactly what we’ve done. We started Wholesome Family Farms because we wanted to make changes in our world. We wanted to regenerate our soil and provide the highest quality of milk, meat, and eggs for not only our growing family but also our community. We sell 100% grass fed beef and raw milk, pasture raised pork and chicken, and free range eggs. We also custom graze, sell Spanish Goat genetics and lease our goats out for grazing.
We are here to help people get a nourishing meal on the table with ease. Its our goal to make our customers life effortless. Finding nourishing milk and meat is so easy for them in our one stop shop. Whether its giving you a great recipe, family advice, or just spending time chatting: we’re here to create community.
As a mom of 6 I know how hard it is to feed your family a healthy meal with food you trust. Life is busy between after school sports, the pile of dirty dishes next to the sink, and the never ending laundry. So there is no time to search for healthy food, but I know so many families want to make that a priority. That’s why we are different. We give them a source they trust and recipes they love so life is easy again, They can fill their freezer with the highest quality meat they can find and have the best tasting raw milk around.
We are most proud of our raw milk, Seeing your kids struggle with bloating from drinking regular milk is not easy. Every time our daughter Natalie drank milk she complained of a stomach ache. She struggled with this for years until we started drinking 100% grass fed raw milk. Now she can drink milk & eat ice cream with no issues and I will never switch back.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think our story built our reputation. If a husband and wife can love farming so much and raise 6 kids while doing all of that. That’s a farmer they trust. Our customers aren’t just another sale they are literally our friends. We are strangers one day and connect on such a deep level we become great friends.
We tell our story through Facebook, instgram, and most importantly email marketing. That’s where I connect the most. I share what life is really like on the farm. Recipes that save my sanity in the kitchen, because if a mom of 6 can get a meal on the table….well that will definitely motivate my customers to do it too.
Our entire community sees us working hard but also striving to do the best we can with all we have been blessed with. That’s a business that’s worth supporting.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I am 100% sold on email marketing. I send out a weekly email to my customers. and do 5 day sales launches throughout the year.
80% of the time my emails are all about building that relationship. When I give them something that is of value to them, they trust me. Its all about serving them and the sales will follow.
I focus very hard on giving them exactly what they want or need. My customers love recipes to make cooking easier, kitchen hacks, inspirational stories, and learn what life with 6 kids is like.
It builds a deep connection and gives them a sense that I’m not just here to make a sale, I’m here to serve and help them in any way I can.
Because if my mistakes can help them I’m so willing to share about it.
