We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachelle Fallon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachelle, thanks for joining us today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
‘Being mobile is gonna be so fun and gypsy like, a new workspace everyday’, said ME. That turns out to be 80% true. I’ve learned to ask lots of questions before hand now. I was just getting going after COVID and took BFF appointments. She said she had a dirt driveway, which was fine because me and Maddi girl have done some 4x4in. Well, that dirt driveway was a small mountain. I got a little bit of a running start and headed up….halfway my SUV tires started spinning and all traction was lost. I was now sliding backwards out of freakin control. I raised 4 active kids (3 boys) so I can keep a level head in most stressful situations. NOT NOW, I looked like a backward slithering snake and stopped in a ditch unscathed, however, I sounded like a wounded banshee! So many tears that my face was black and my eyes were on fire from mascara. Finally found something to wipe my eyes and there stood a very small man that did not speak English and obviously wasn’t gonna help me. I now know why, he was protecting a very large pot farm. Still crying, I called AAA, and they laughed and said they don’t handle this situation. So I called a tow truck….it was a small fee of $1200. Good Lord, I wasn’t prepared for that either. Per usual, my youngest son who knows everyone in town, young and old, had a buddy come Jeep me out. Guess what, I told him to put me at my appointment spot and I threw down 2 sets of brows like a boss 🖤
Rachelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a licensed Mobile Body Art Facility. My traveling studio is a 1959 15 foot vintage trailer. I travel to my clients and provide cosmetic tattoo services, ie. Eyebrows and lip blushing. I’ve been dabbling in graphic tattooing with the help of a friend, so you’ll see more of that coming in the future. I went to Woodbury University downtown LA in the 80s studying fashion design and business administration, ultimately ending college at Cal State Fullerton. I’ve always loved art and thrive on being creative and thinking outside the box. For 10 years I made jewelry out of silverware and sold it mostly on Etsy (when Etsy was purely handmade). I was in newspapers, magazines, featured seller on Etsy, and even had my items displayed on the Today Show. Fast forward to becoming an empty nester and sifting around on instagram I came across Microblading and vintage trailers, not necessarily in that order, and I knew I could marry the 2 for a most unique grand mobile biz. 3 words…LABOR OF LOVE, and complete gratitude to my kids dad who did most the work. As with any legitimate successful business you are not getting rich quick. I worked non-stop, late nights, weekends to get my work out there. I did many people for free, and still do. When the focus is only $ it is no longer a soul fulfilling passion. COVID was a silver lining for me because me traveling to my clients felt comforting and safe, and this is what sets me uniquely apart from my fellow artists. As with anything in life it has its pros and cons….to me the cons are just considered less fun pros. I’m so proud of myself for keeping this little wanderlust business adventure going and thriving for 5 years while navigating my personal and family life. Insert the support of my amazing family and friends here 🖤 Here at the Mobile Brow Lounge not only are you getting tattooed, but we are connecting on a soul level because we have connected for a reason. I continually keep myself educated on everything PMU and tattoo. I have helped and enhanced many people, that is what I love most.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation within my market again comes down to being mobile. My fellow artists don’t really know what to expect, then when they visit or I visit them, they are blown away. It’s a very organized and minimal space.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As a youngster I was quite shy. As an adult I’m pretty reserved as well (unless I’m goin Mama Bear). Making jewelry all those years and selling online I didn’t have to talk to anyone. This is NOT the case now, I’ve learned to promote myself everywhere and every way. You got weird brows (bank teller lady)? I’m gonna slip you my card, offer a discount, and make you feel like a million bucks before even doing the tattoo. We are all just wanting to live our best beautiful successful lives…lol
